#introduction
I'm Denzil. I'm Cornish, exiled in Canada (not my fault) involved in the #independence movement & preserving #language & #culture, and #traditions of #Cornwall (also Wales) Not Welsh but keen! I make things: string #puppets #papercrafts #fibrearts #art. I like to research #history. I am on my #union executive. I collect #toys, #playingcards #musical #instruments #boardgames #ephemera. I play & arrange #folkmusic. I do #magic (prestidigitation.) I work. I am for the marginalised.
I have long been a decentralisation skeptic, but after 24 hours on a Welsh mastodon server my mind is changed. It is truly great to have the Local feed for people here and also the Federated feed for the wider world. My partner is on a gamedev server and doesn't find the Local feed as useful, so perhaps it's really a strength of locality to the physical world.
Given how toots are distributed, if there's a specific community you most want to interact with and discover, it seems like a good idea to join an instance focused on that community.
Toots from people you follow appear in your Home timeline.
Toots from others on your instance appear in your Local timeline, making them easier to discover.
Toots from people followed by others on your instance appear in your Federated timeline.
The Local and Federated timelines are very instance-focused.

A warm welcome!
I am sure you will find some cool sisters on here.
Your post is already great!
You can boost your own post too.
Also, be sure to add hashtags and describe your interests/concerns in your profile.
What about asking for/ using # hastags relating to black women?
Did you come from Twitter? If so, perhaps you could try using similar hashtags that you used on there🤔
Just my own opinion. Any other tips from anyone?
Some people had mistakenly thought that Mastodon’s local timelines were obsolete. Now that we’ve seen the limits on how high you can scale a single instance, it’s obvious that the future of the fediverse is a large number of small communities talking to each other, not a small handful of giant single points of failure.
Keep Mastodon weird. Get to know your neighbors, and help build your local community.
Hi all! Over from Twitter, like so many others, so #introduction?
I’m #Welsh, work doing #comms for a university research institute, live in #Yorkshire, and love #books, #writing and #design. I also have young kids though, so have no time to do any of those things.
Looking forward to seeing how this plays out, it already feels a lot friendlier over here!

Twitter has become more and more like a type of outrage engine. In Mastodon there are no quote tweets, the oxygen of the pile-on. The metrics of reshares/likes are also dampened so that they are not prominent at all beneath a post in your feed. It’s a very different place. And I like it.
To introduce myself... I'm Antoni, I'm in Denbighshire. I've worked on this project since 2014. It's not my job, but I do devote a lot of time to it (ask my family, they'll confirm that!)
If you have Belgian ancestors who were in north Wales 100+ years ago, I may know a little about them. Please ask! Or please tell me about them...

An #introduction! I'm Tomas L. Martin, a Senior Lecturer in Materials Physics at the University of #Bristol.
I use advanced #microscopy to study #materials degradation, particularly in energy generation. As materials experience heat, stress, irradiation, and chemical attack, their structure and properties change often in an unpredictable way.
Our work helps partners in #nuclear fission, #fusion, #renewable energy and #aerospace design more reliable materials for a cleaner future.
Can’t emphasise enough how much the Mastodon experience is improved by choosing the right app to use it. The official Mastodon app is terrible with very limited functionality, making for a very isolated feeling from everyone and the wider communities. Metatext is waaaaay better and replicates the Twitter experience much more closely. Mastodon is actually enjoyable with this app.
I advise picking through a bunch of apps to see which one is more suitable for you before settling on one to use.
Since I joined #mastodon this weekend, I've learnt quite a lot about the distributed nature of the platform. I know it's possible to move from one server to another. There's a handshake mechanism in between servers, and when you move you can take your followers and the people you follow with you. One question remains, what if the #mastodon server you're on is down and gone, and you have to move to another server... Can you still do it somehow? Or is the handshake mechanism required explicitly?
The family was talking over dinner about the mass migration of people (like me) from Twitter to Mastodon, and the cultural effect that that is already having on the fediverse. We tried likening it to an ecological event but settled on "colonisation" as the better description.
To the colonisers (like me), please be gentle. Look around. Listen. We're all guests here, even the old hands. When I arrived a week ago people were warm and welcoming. (People still are.) It was nice. Let's not trash this.
To the old hands, I offer a massive thank you for your kindness and patience.
