Now that I have the opportunity, let me our quality-diversity algorithm to Mastadon. It's based on @janhjensen 's generative algorithm. We avoid stagnation issues, and illuminates opportunities across chemical space, and outperforms approaches!

I am not sure I ever wrote an #Introduction; if I did, it's probably too far back to find. So here we go:

Live in rural NE Ceredigion, fairly close to the geographic centre of Cymru.
European, Welsh. Brexit is crazy and will eventually be reversed; our job is to hasten the day.
Lecturer (AI, web, Open Source, etc), PhD bioinformatics, Ubuntu user, cat slave, love languages and playing the piano (esp. Liszt, Chopin). E-bike enthusiast.
Former Plaid candidate (County and Senedd).

@anniemo71 When people on Social Media suggest interesting books, I see if my city's library has it, or the next city. I'll put it on hold. If they don't have it, I might ask them to buy it.
Both books you mention are in my neighbouring city's collection. Hooray! Thanks for the recommendation.

But I will borrow books by local authors, even if I don't read them, to help create demand.

I have used Booktopia when I really need it.
Never Amazon.

@FediFollows @gretathunberg hi there Fedifollows. I know being verified on mastodon is not happening (yet)... but I wonder if someone put themself on here impressionating themselfs to be a well known or famous person.. how do people really know it's the real person?

We are pretty new to mastodon ourselfs so we just wonder how the verification works on making sure people are getting influenced by the real people and not fake accounts that impressionate someone else?

It's honestly disconcerting seeing accounts on here (celebrities) that have posts with 60+ replies and not a single reply of their own to anybody in that thread

This is exactly the kind of thing we want to avoid here. The asymettrical parasocial experience that is encouraged with such people

@anniemo71 I buy my books from our local independent bookshop, and charity shops. Occasionally I will buy from second hand bookshops but I find myself overwhelmed with the numbers of books, and often the lack of organisation.
Ebay is also good but some sellers over inflate the value.

I won't use Amazon unless a client leave me no option for project parts.

@anniemo71 I try to buy #books independent sellers when I see them. Unfortunately none near me. Otherwise direct if I can or from Blackwell's.
I do have an excess of books* so donate to charity shops and secondhand bookstores. I also gave some animation books to the library as they were having a animation workshop in the summer. Sold a few via eBay.

*Yeh, I know, seems unlikely, but have been collecting for some time and my interests have changed.

Hey all, glad I am able to join this community! Born and lived in the hills of mid-Wales most of my life, now living in Frankfurt, Germany. Known of Mastodon for a while but finally made the #twittermigation leap since my timeline there gets less of interest. I’m working with cloud native technologies as my day job, hobby by writing apps with Swift and general smart home hackery in my evenings. Looking forward to building my network here :-) #introduction

Ok, let's start with the #introduction :)

I am Vanessa, a Chilean researcher working in France for about 4 years. I work in data visualization, mainly (but not only) with geo-temporal data. I'm also interested in #ecology, #feminism, #philosophy, #art, #science in general, #writing and #books.

One of the nicest things about Mastodon so far is having a very scientific and academia focused feed where I can discover and follow those working in fields where I don't have a background.

It is wonderful for seeing the diversity of research and being inspired by the works of others.

Hello all you new people! Now feels more than ever like the time to finally ditch the bird site, and free ourselves from big business oversight of our social media platforms.

There's a short but steepish learning curve to getting the hang of Mastodon, but once you have, you'll quickly see its advantages.

3 feeds (following, local and "federated") instead of 1 (plus notifications of course) helps break down echo chamber barriers. We're also (generally) more civil over here ☺️

Seems the exodus from twitter is accelerating rather than slowing down. Last 24 hours has been the largest influx so far!

I’m a Prof at the Centre for Cognitive Neuroimaging (CCNi), UofG, Scotland, studying human memory. My lab uses a range of tools, including behaviour, EEG/MEG, fMRI and intracranial (single unit + LFP) EEG recordings, trying to understand how the human brain reconstructs past experiences from memory, and how our memories change over time and when we repeatedly remember something.

@freemo I’m here because of, I was never very active on Twitter but I can’t continue to be the source of this fool’s ad revenue. techcrunch.com/2022/11/04/elon

I am interested in and I have two book chapters with numerous others with a tutorial on and a tutorial on in a research methodology book. For some reason during this exodus, at least as far as QOTO is concerned, I've noticed a very large portion of people coming in are women scientists. Sadly women seem to be a minority representation in STEM, so seeing this makes me happy as I think women bring a lot to STEM communities.

That said, I am left curious why... what about this exodus has more women in STEM migrating than usual.. Is musk in some way seen as more abrasive to women than he is to men?

I haven't done an so I guess I should introduce myself.

My name is Tom, I'm a and platform engineer at JPL and I've been slaving away there for the past 6 1/2 years.

I also enjoy educating, open science/data and software in my spare time.

I'm also to add to the entertainment.

Guess it’s time for an #introduction post! I’ve Dave, I’m a programmer, and I’ve been working remotely since before covid. I enjoy running & cycling to keep myself sane. I’m an assistant coach at Swansea Harriers, but my results show that I’m not very fast myself!

Signed up to Mastodon a while ago, but didn’t really use it. The whole Twitter thing has got me interested in it again, so I’ve switched to a smaller server and am already starting to see lots of interesting people to follow here.
