@freemo I wouldn't support the abolition of rights, but I would prefer to live in that situation over one where we still have rights but live under a dictator. Mainly because I believe that a free and equal democracy provides the best chance for the restoration of rights when they are taken away.

In other words, I believe a true democracy lacking rights has a tendency to mend its attitude towards rights to appease voters.
Whereas in the flip side, an authoritarian regime with rights, those rights are likely on their way out.

So, that's why I see democracy as a foundation for equal rights: We the people demand them.

The #UK's a strange parody of #democracy that the only reason #RishiSunak is #PrimeMinister at all is that #DominicCummings didn’t like (dismissed) one of #SavidJavid's #PoliticalAdvisers during #BorisJohnson's joke reign as #PM. Not even an inkling of an election anywhere. It reads like something out of badly written soap opera.

A majority of people blame the government for the cost of living crisis and more people trust Labour with the economy than the Conservatives.

They're the findings of an exclusive, nationally representative poll of more than 2,000 people from Find Out Now.

Twitter, Musk, Trump, sacrilege, perversity … I’m running out of warnings.

You’re not going to believe what Elon is doing now. Strange days.

@pwgtennant It may also be the first flush of a new thing, everyone being enthused and enthusiastic. I'm seeing far more interest, interaction, and engagement here than anywhere else pretty much ever—but also much more here-now than here-before.

I’m certainly not the right voice for this but I’m hoping with patience and lots of effort that mastodon becomes an inclusive and safe place for the marginalized and threatened. Some recent events have me concerned, but the quick and thoughtful responses have me hopeful 🙏🏼

I signed up a few weeks ago, so time for my #introduction. I was born in South Wales and now live in Southern California. If I am not outside walking, or watching British TV reruns, then I am building Apps using #orclAPEX

Three days before Christmas a few years ago.

A ten minute walk from my home, there were no cars on the roads, like mine they were probably all stuck in the snow!

Just one of those perfect, pastel, frosty winter days. Silence and a sense of time frozen like the landscape.

The balance between the trees and the sheep in the composition was magical serendipity.

Currently Masto.host is experiencing the highest volume of traffic that has ever reached the infrastructure.

The service is partially degraded and I will be doing fast upgrades on the platform.

These can lead to partial downtime, errors and large delays in support requests.

Really sorry. Doing the best I can on my end. Hope you understand. Thanks.

@mastodonusercount The migration to Mastodon is not slowing down. Sustained at around ten thousand registrations per hour. Been like that for twenty hours now.

For comparison back in October there used to be only about 50 registrations per hour.

With very nearly 60% of Brits agreeing that Labour supported Tory #Brexit was a dreadful mistake and we were wrong to leave the EU, when are the politicians in Westminster going to start listening to and acting on the will of the people?

For Twitter folks who are brand new to Mastodon

Few pointers from a veteran of <checks notes> 2 weeks:

1️⃣ BOOST generously: If you see a Toot you like & want others to see it, boost (RT) it. Unlike Twitter, liking it does nothing for visibility

2️⃣ HASHTAGS are important, use liberally. They're the only way to make content discoverable by search

3️⃣ Use alt-text for images/gifs for accessibility

4️⃣ Err towards content warnings - not just for obv triggering content; helps keep feeds uncluttered
