Looks like my @arstechnica subscription is up for renewal. When I got it last year, it was a no-brainier to ops for Ars Pro++, because I wanted the free Yubikey it came with anyway. I considered downgrading today, since the lower Ars Pro tier has all the features I want, but I decided to stay at the higher tier, because the ~$4/mo I'm paying is less than many of my other #news subscriptions and really well worth it for multiple reasons:
1. I really appreciate the quality of the original #journalism on #science, #tech, and #security topics by folks like @dangoodin and @JenLucPiquant, among others
2. It offers an actual add-free experience, unlike many other news subscriptions
3. Subscribers can use RSS feeds!
4. They have an active, official #Fediverse presence
@ricardoharvin Would I prefer if they included alt-text in their posts? Yes. However, just as one would guess for a news outlet, the image is generally (perhaps always?) the first image in the article linked, which often conveys little information other than flavor and is always captioned and uses alt-text in the article page, so, as omitted alt-text on mastodon goes, this is one of the least impactful cases. But more saliently, as most of the press refuses to leave Twitter, which is at this point actively stoking hate against many groups, I think that's the far more impactful aspect for inclusivity in the larger picture.
@arstechnica @dangoodin @JenLucPiquant
@internic @arstechnica @dangoodin @JenLucPiquant It may be more impactful, but not in terms of inclusivity.
From my perspective, you're conflating two entirely separate and distinct issues, both of which are important.
It seems you consider one more important than the other. I'm asking that they meet a higher standard as I consider their presence here less impactful otherwise.
