Is anyone here yet? I wrote a cool thing about why vertical farms don’t work but also why we so desperately need something like vertical farms. https://www.canarymedia.com/articles/food-and-farms/why-vertical-farming-just-doesnt-work
I hate to be a debbie-downer, but the idea that decentralization increases resilience is just wrong, wishful thinking. Shit happens. Stuff decays. Monopolies fuck around with things, individuals fuck around with things.
Institutions create resilience. We like to fantasize that it's otherwise, play around with anarchist/libertarian ideas, but it's the luxury given to us by the simplicity and resilience of the institutionally-strong context in which we live.
@bflipp there's a good article by @tchambers that has a well thought out and reasoned approach that also suggests avoiding a knee-jerk reaction.
I feel like #Threads would be much better served being used as an on-ramp to the Fediverse for normies and we should be providing ample resources to migrate them out of #Meta ASAP instead of preemptively blocking Threads completely. People on #Mastodon seem overly skittish and reactionary when we can use Threads to poison pill all of Facebook.
I know most of y'all aren't reading anything this week at all, let alone today, but there's a really great article by Bryn Nelson out in the Journal Cancer Cytopathology on the problems of using "A.I." in medicine: https://acsjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/cncy.22739.
It was fantastic to talk to Dr Nelson about this, and he honestly did fantastic work covering this very important topic.
(And if you're interested in more of what I, specifically, had to say, here, also keep a look out for the upcoming July-August issue of American Scientist.)

I've tweaked it a bit and am now comfortable with sharing it widely, so here it is! My crochet pattern for Einstein's Hat, the recently discovered aperiodic monotile: https://www.ellipsis.cx/~liana/einsteins-hat.pdf
(And if you make the tiles in max 4 colors, you can ALSO illustrate the four color theorem.)
Hi all! 👋 I come from Reddit, so you can probably understand why I'm hesitant to post too many personal details. I'm hoping to loosen up here over time, but you can just call me by my username, or should it ever come up, then you can call me Tee.
This is probably my first time letting the internet know that I'm a #bisexual #black #African woman.
I tend to cope with frustration by being facetious, and lately, the world has been VERY frustrating. I'm also an adult who is newly diagnosed with #ADHD, so my thoughts tend to go to interesting places, and I have an interest in a variety of topics.
Work in Healthcare
I am currently really into #Skincare and thus, I now have a small collection of hats 😀
Looking forward to participating more!

@InAFeverDream Yeah, although some of those things predate the Fediverse (and many predate Mastodon). If you haven't already seen it, I liked this article by @catvalente that I thought described this well and in a way that moved me, as a member of "the Oregon Trail generation."

@emc2 @autiomaa Part of me actually wonders if the emergence of #Threads may be an opportunity to spawn a new subset of the Fediverse that is more focused on the singular goal of aggregating users to break down the walled gardens without the other cultural hangups of the existing Fediverse culture that cause it to eschew usability in many ways.
To date, I think that would have been difficult, because there seems to be a culture in Fedi of de-federating based on FUD, and no one wants to join a new server with no one to talk to. Threads will likely not have that hang up and might ironically provide the content to facilitate the growth of a more competitive Fediverse.
@j_bertolotti I had a colleague (here in the US) whose girlfriend was Italian (dual citizen). When Trump was elected I said he could tell her that the US elected our own Berlusconi just to make her feel at home.
The rate limiting incident in Twitter isn't really what pushed me over to use Mastodon more and more. Currently there is a hashtag on Twitter related to the French riots that's calling on the expulsion of all Muslim, African, and Arab immigrants from the entirety of Europe. The entirety and trending hashtag (at #2) is filled with images encouraging mass killings and lynchings of Arabs. There is no come back from this.
@ASleepyWanderer the free iNaturalist and Seek apps from Cal Academy are a great resource for identifying any kind of organism.
But here, #Entomology or #Insects should work.
Theoretical physicist by training (PhD in quantum open systems/quantum information), University lecturer for a bit, and currently paying the bills as an engineer working in optical communication (implementation) and quantum communication (concepts), though still pursuing a little science on the side. I'm interested in physics and math, of course, but I enjoy learning about really any area of science, philosophy, and many other academic areas as well. My biggest other interest is hiking and generally being out in nature.
