A new documentary series on the Ashley Madison breach launches on Hulu tomorrow (July 7) in the US and on Disney+ in the UK. I might have an appearance or two :)

I think defederating Threads is a huge missed opportunity for Mastodon to grow.

Imagine interacting with their users and letting them know that: you scroll posts without ads, your timeline is in chronological order, your client doesn’t spy on you, you only see what you want and no other content is pushed to your timeline, etc…

if I was a Threads users, I would move to Mastodon as soon as I find out 🙂

I guess on some deep level I don't understand why Mark Zuckerberg needs all of my personal data three separate times. It's starting to seem like an obsession.

Sir Isaac Newton's "Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica" was published #OTD in 1687. Often referred to as just “the Principia,” it presents Newton’s laws of motion and his universal law of gravitation.

336 years old and we still teach its main results!

If you all happen to run across the july-august special issue of American Scientist, you might find some things in there you might like to glance at 👀

@bici On Mastodon you can block domains, so if you block the Threads domain I think you can avoid seeing any of it pretty easily. @mmasnick @Gargron

Remember all those weird fungal diseases people were dying of last year (like Julie Powell, the wonderful author of Julie & Julia)? That COVID-aware people said were likely from #COVID-damaged immune systems?

The Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota shared this study last month showing that the rise in hospitalizations for fungal infections...was driven by COVID19-associated fungal infections.

@thomasconnor @maxeddy I took that route in January, and not only did I get to see some interesting old buildings and natural beauty as we traveled up the Hudson Valley, but in some places I could see areas of water that were frozen over and people were ice fishing. It was far more scenic than I expected.

Here’s my big announcement!

As a human rights lawyer, I’ve spent my career supporting DV survivors, asylum seekers, and demanding economic, social, and climate justice.

I’m running for U.S. Congress in the district I grew up in because these crises are getting worse—and justice can’t wait.

We need to stop worrying about that Meta is going to do, and worry a lot more about what we want to do. If we build the fedinet thoughtfully, Meta's vast userbase could be a major asset to a speedy effort to globalize decentralized social networks. #FutureOverFeatures

TikTok’s auto-subtitling AI is having trouble interpreting the word “threads”, so I’m instead watching people cover Instagram’s release of “threats”.

I just wrote a feature about sonification, which uses sound to help make data accessible to blind/visually impaired users. This is an important type of freedom: giving more people the power to participate in science & pursue their passions. technologyreview.com/2023/06/1 #freedom #july4th

Alternative headline: "We just had one of the coolest July 4ths of the rest of your life."

This July 4 was hot. Earth’s hottest day on record, in fact.

M24 - the small Sagittarius star cloud isn't an object at all, but actually an area of our Galaxy that is clear of obscuring dust. Without the dust we can see deeper into the Galaxy and the millions of stars therein.

@da5nsy @evilscientistca This seems to address it: "M24 is not a bright galaxy, star cluster, or nebula. It's a gap in nearby, obscuring interstellar dust clouds that allows a view of the distant stars in the Sagittarius spiral arm of our Milky Way galaxy."

I am sorry to those who came over here with me in November in the hope and expectation that a good chunk of legal Twitter would also come.

Sadly most of the accounts I recommended as they came over then are now fairly quiet on here - many not having posted since December/January.

Am looking out for other legal accounts to recommend - and if you know of any, do let me know.

Any area of law, any jurisdiction.

Oh! That reminds me to share something I’ve found super useful at work. If you’re in a situation where a team’s docs are in markdown spread across a bunch of git repos and you want a unified, searchable interface: mkdocs is your friend.

In a new git repo I add all the repos I want in the unified docs as git submodules. Them I use mkdocs to generate unified docs that I render with GH pages.

Doesn’t interfere with original docs at all.
