Paint that scatters 98% of the light that hits it, thereby keeping indoor temperatures cooler. 😎
Paris should paint their zinc roofs with this paint.
I'm constantly amazed that so many people have so much time and energy to spend maintaining social media accounts on so many platforms. Not a judgement, just a personal observation. Because I've been asked a lot: I'm unlikely to join Bluesky or Threads or any of the newfangled Birdsite or MetaFaceGram clones.
For me, it's less about whether these platforms are useful or benign or hostile or worthy than it is about maintaining boundaries and limits on my overall social media use and consumption. And I'm okay w/ the trade-offs of potentially limiting my reach if it ultimately means I have both more free time and more balance/sanity in my life.
AQUA (my #quantumComputing and #quantumInternet research group) goes two for three on paper acceptances at this year's IEEE Quantum Week!
Accepted:

and a second paper that isn't on the arXiv yet.
Firefox DevTools just got on the Fediverse: @FirefoxDevTools
Lawyers, some with business in front of the Supreme Court, venmoed unknown amounts of money to Clarence Thomas’s aide.
#security friends - what are your favourite resources for sharing with folks who aren’t currently working in tech but are “the person in the family who fixes computers” types and whom you think might be super well suited to security? Thinking entry level but directionally useful books, courses, newsletters, YouTube channels etc.

Can shadows move faster than light?
Not really. There is nothing moving sideways, so nothing is moving faster than light (which, incidentally, mean you can't use shadows to communicate faster than light).
But the edges of the projection of the shadow can indeed appear to move arbitrarily fast.

Don't talk about illegal things (abortion in certain places, DIY HRT, etc) on facebook messenger. Don't do it on whatsapp or via SMS or Instagram DMs or Twitter or Mastodon or Discord or whatever.
Use signal. Use a PIN on signal. Turn on auto-destruction of messages. If your data is not fully end-to-end encrypted, that data can and will be handed over to police and it will be used to prosecute you.
Did you know that the awesome @internetarchive has an app that lets you check if they need a copy of a book? It's so handy for sending things on to where they're needed for preservation and sharing. https://help.archive.org/help/donate-books-app-for-ios-and-android/
I'm pretty sure I've now scanned every one of the hundreds of books in my parents' house. More cool stuff coming your way, IA!
This issue is why I would never buy another traditional Android phone. The fact that three (or sometimes just two) years of OS updates are provided by the manufacturer, plus the fact that the bootloader is often locked, basically guarantees that even the best flagship devices of today will unnecessarily end up being trash within five years or so.
These devices are computers, and they should be treated like computers.
@SvenGeier It probably depends strongly on who you ask. I can see that many mathematicians might think first of cardinality, but I think basically anyone else would think of the length and consequently call it finite. This is probably not least because most people outside of a few STEM fields have no concept of cardinality.
A question for the #MtBoS community ...
At what age do students meet sine and cosine?
Do you use distances on a Unit Circle, or some other definition?
Thanks ... if you're happy to do so, please boost for reach.

So one bill that always passes (*unless I missed a year) is the National Defense Authorization Act. It usually does so stuffed to the gills with plenty of non-defense items precisely because it always passes. Right now the house is working on their version. The Senate has just released theirs: https://www.armed-services.senate.gov/press-releases/reed-and-wicker-file-fiscal-year-2024-national-defense-authorization-act You may want to take a look through it and/or contact your senators.
@MatthewChat @idoubtit I can tell you that I've published papers in both physics and astrophysics, and I've never heard of tektites before. But that shouldn't be particularly surprising, since science tends to be pretty specialized. By the same token, I also know very little (beyond the basics) about operating an optical telescope, because all my work in astronomy was related to X-ray observations.
Granted, I probably also wouldn't be making extraordinary claims about such objects. 🙂
Multichain drained of another $107 million days after previous theft

Theoretical physicist by training (PhD in quantum open systems/quantum information), University lecturer for a bit, and currently paying the bills as an engineer working in optical communication (implementation) and quantum communication (concepts), though still pursuing a little science on the side. I'm interested in physics and math, of course, but I enjoy learning about really any area of science, philosophy, and many other academic areas as well. My biggest other interest is hiking and generally being out in nature.
