I don’t understand why any author pays the exorbitant Nature open access fees ($11,690!) when they can legally generate a view only PDF of their piece to share.

Authors, please post your ReadCube links!

To do so, go here:

@davidho Might the answer be grant or institutional requirements to publish in an journal? Using the feature you mention could be viewed as functionally equivalent but it might not technically satisfy such a requirement.

#CMSPaper 1226: the fact that #neutrinos have mass raises questions that the #standardmodel cannot answer. This paper searches for predictions by one of the explanations for that problem, specifically for the simultaneous production of undiscovered heavy Z bosons and #majorana neutrinos. It is a #nullresult and the most sensitive analysis ever for this combination of a Z' and Majorana neutrinos (for an extensive range of neutrino masses).

@MichaelPorter @idoubtit Right, well the workaround there is if the service lets you host email for a domain you own (as I am doing with Fastmail) and has features to export your data from their various services (easy for email, as long as they support imap but worth checking for any other services you might use) then longevity is more of a nice to have than a necessity.

BUFFALO: I'm on my way to you this weekend! In between pickets, I'll be at the Helium with my latest hour of standup!

@MichaelPorter @idoubtit One problem I had when I was looking was that a lot of reviews focused on free services, but I was specifically looking for paid, because I figured it would be a more sustainable business long term and because I wanted to use a service where I was the customer rather than the product.

Folks in western canada… anyone interested in a place to camp for a week? We have a site at Hidden Valley in the Shuswaps Sun to Fri July 30- Aug 4. We need to stay in #yeg for family/medical reasons and have run afoul of a very restrictive cancellation policy. The site will fit a tent trailer or large tent.
Message for details.

@MichaelPorter @idoubtit I currently use Fastmail for my email (and they also offer calendaring and other functions), which I've liked quite well, and it includes some nice email masking features for avoiding spam. There are other decent option, but obviously what will work for you depends on your use case. People who are especially concerned about privacy may prefer other options like Protonmail that focus on having zero knowledge.

I had no idea "subscription bombing" was a thing, but fyi:

- it's annoying and nearly impossible to stop, but
- the REAL purpose is to bury legitimate emails warning of fraud.

someone had added a bank account for transfers to our actual bank account. it was pending approval. to avoid my seeing the email from my actual bank about this, they've signed me up for a shitload of newsletters, websites, and services

@Amimoregore @SarraceniaWilds @BlackAzizAnansi there are problems with hashtags:

1) they are not designed to, nor can they replace what an algorithmic feed provides

2) client support for hashtags is inconsistent.

3) hashtags require near-perfect use to be useful. So that’s a failure before you start.

Hashtags are useful, but they are not magic.

@bynkii @BlackAzizAnansi Dont get me wrong, I want it to happen. Im here for a reason. But if this community keeps mistaking people ekeing out a living with capitalism, and scream-bragging how HEALTHY it is to not have any of the features that are useful and important to people that are not them, it will simply never happen.

Worldcoin offers users $20 worth of a new cryptocurrency in exchange for scanning that user's retina and adding them to a database. Their business model is mass surveillance and cryptocurrency wrapped into one.

So far, the launch has been a disaster: buzzfeednews.com/article/richa

Sam Altman, the founder of Worldcoin AND the CEO of OpenAI, says that the rise of AI is why we need tools to verify who is human.

Yes, Sam is selling us one tool to "protect" us from the harm his other tool is causing.

#PCAST is seeking public input on nutrition research, as part of a new working group on using nutrition science to combat diet-related diseases. The key questions being focused on are

1. How can the United States obtain the greatest return from federal investment in nutrition research?

2. How could/should research-based interventions for primary and secondary prevention of diet-related chronic diseases be introduced into federal programs?

3. What can be done to assure equitable access to the benefits of the federal nutrition research investment?

Further information on the public call can be found at

I have a horrible feeling that a lot of people look at forest fires, floods, record heatwaves, etc., and think, "This is how it's going to be from now on."

It's not. We're still pumping CO2 into the atmosphere, where it's accumulating.

The future is going to be much, much worse. Unless we take drastic action now.

The US government faces legal restrictions on how much personal information it can gather on citizens.

But technology has significantly increased the threat to privacy and civil liberties by giving the government access to sensitive personal information beyond what it could collect through court-authorized surveillance.
