Everytime I see the clip from last night’s debate of Chris Christie saying: "I've had enough already tonight of a guy who sounds like ChatGPT,” I’m reminded of the role the insult “glasshole” played in killing Google Glass.
If insults comparing people to ChatGPT really take off it could go a long way to reframing ChatGPT in a highly negative light. Obviously this is just one example, but a trend to watch for.
Low vaccination, low ventilation, low masking: schools closing already from outbreaks of airborne diseases (COVID, Flu, Strep).
Long term impacts of multiple COVID infections are bad.
A Corsi–Rosenthal Box (a type of DIY air filtration) can be $75US, masking can be inexpensive and opening windows is free.
We can make choices to live with things better.
Examples of schools closing right after opening:

I am dead, I can’t believe this AI intro text I just got. If you thumb through it, there are all the usual suspects like breadth-first search and probability.
Then you open the first chapter and it goes HARD on the current state of things.
Then it’s back to mathematical notation like nothing happened.
The DoJ lawsuit alleges #SpaceX routinely discouraged asylees and refugees from applying and refused to hire or consider them, because of their citizenship status, in violation of the Immigration & Nationality Act. https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/justice-department-sues-spacex-discriminating-against-asylees-and-refugees-hiring
@wolfpld @TodayInTwitter @craiggrannell Yes, the "views" on Twitter are basically just impressions. See discussion here:
⬆️ Launch moved due to weather - we are now go for 09:30 JST / 01:30 BST / 02:30 CEST on 27 August 2023!
My nerves, my nerves - I want to see this thing fly and get my hands on the data, I had the first observation proposals planned back in 2014 ... !

@jaztrophysicist appears to be stuck somewhere nightmarish and stunningly beautiful.
😱
@devezer Yeah, that is a nice feeling if you can find it. Good luck!
@devezer That's too bad; your work seems quite interesting. Hopefully Bluesky turns into something good that works out for you and others. I suspect it's more likely it will implode in the not-too-distant future, and if so I hope you'll give the Fediverse another try at that point.
Trump's video interview with Tucker Carlson racked up ~75M "views" on X in its first 2 hours.
I wrote for the Washington Post's live blog about why that's a deeply misleading metric that doesn't actually tell us how many people watched it: https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2023/08/23/republican-presidential-debate/#link-PQMIE5H7T5CANF25HMWGJSUR5Y
Today and over the next couple days we can expect a lot of news related to the Georgia Trump racketeering indictments. To demonstrate how Mastodon has become an excellent source for coverage of such events, and to promote good accounts to follow, this account will be boosting breaking reports and analysis.
What is the business model that will keep #BlueSky open? It's a business. It will need revenue. But even when the get out of Beta and open it up, it'll be far smaller than Twitter ever was, with pretty much most of the same costs to make it function.
The Internet Archive has joined the Partnership on AI.
I expect fast-reading people to read we're suddenly all AI-crazy, but in fact the organization is a pump-the-brakes what-part-of-AI-makes-sense study group trying to get a grip on the now-loose cyberhorse galloping through everyone's backyard.
nice summary on the amount of exoplanets discovered so far (spoiler: terrestrial - 198 exoplanets)

#Wireshark 4.0.8 has been released. Enjoy.

Theoretical physicist by training (PhD in quantum open systems/quantum information), University lecturer for a bit, and currently paying the bills as an engineer working in optical communication (implementation) and quantum communication (concepts), though still pursuing a little science on the side. I'm interested in physics and math, of course, but I enjoy learning about really any area of science, philosophy, and many other academic areas as well. My biggest other interest is hiking and generally being out in nature.
