@Wolven I don't even know the specifics, but just having heard many HOA stories I'm already getting angry just imagining. HOAs are all the things I hate most about society distilled into an essence of vileness. Hang in there, and I hope you're able to escape it soon.
Introducing Bark! Low-latency multi-receiver live-sync lossless audio streaming for local networks. It's like Sonos, but open source, so nobody can brick your devices remotely. It's also written in Rust :)
It sends 48khz uncompressed float32 data over UDP multicast. It can achieve playback sync to within hundreds of microseconds in ideal conditions, and usually to within a millisecond.
I've been working on it in my spare time over the past week, and I'm pretty happy with how it's shaped up. I have three receivers setup and it works remarkably well at keeping everything in sync as I walk around my house. For now it only really works on Linux, and supports Pipewire (and Pulse in theory), but there's no huge impediment to making it truly cross-platform.
It also features a fancy live stats subcommand, which can used on any computer in the same multicast domain to watch the status of the stream cluster:
Attempt at networking post!
Hi! I would love to meet and talk to more people in #dataScience #statistics #stats #pydata #dataViz etc etc
I have a Phd in #appliedMath and I work in #productAnalytics
I attend my local American Statistical Assoc meetings sometimes, but they are rare.
I also helped start an R User Group once, (but haven't used R in more than 10 years), and ran a Big Data reading group in #pdx
Please boost 😀
I'm starting a YouTube channel!
As you probably know I already share a lot of materials and I've had a lot of technical coaches and developers tell me that that's really useful. So, I came up with a plan to do videos.
I'm a little nervous actually and appreciate feedback and suggestions on topics and content that would be useful for you and your colleagues. Please subscribe to the channel and share this post.

If you use WinRAR, it’s time to patch. Since April, hackers have been exploiting a previously unknown vulnerability in the software to spread malware to unsuspecting victims. https://www.pcmag.com/news/update-now-hackers-used-winrar-flaw-since-april-to-spread-malware
Mastodon just keeps getting better! Full text search is here!
Well, almost here...
Mastodon core engineer @renchap has just announced that version 4.2.0 beta3 has just been released and will be rolled out to some instances over the next few days. (https://oisaur.com/@renchap/110946188204729065)
This much requested capability has been in development for a long time and promises to transform Mastodon into a much more capable platform.
Thank you to everyone that has contributed to making search a reality.
“What an astonishing thing a book is… one glance at it & you’re inside the mind of another person, maybe somebody dead for thousands of years. Across the millennia, an author is speaking clearly & silently inside your head, directly to you.
Writing is perhaps the greatest of human inventions, binding together people who never knew each other, citizens of distant epochs. #Books break the shackles of time. A book is proof that humans are capable of working magic.”
- Carl Sagan
Full text search has been merged in #Mastodon `main` branch, and will be in the next (and final?) 4.2.0 beta 🎉
It is opt-in, so it will take some time to be filled with people content as they enable their profile to be indexed, but this was one of the most wanted Mastodon features for some time.
We plan to deploy it to mastodon.social and mastodon.online in the coming days to have a bit more feedback on it and see how it behaves in the wild.
I also want to spotlight and publicly my magnificent co-debunkers and reporters, Kim LaCapria and Arturo Garcia. They're the ones who kept us going this whole time and they are absolutely world-class reporters. We made it five solid years and like I said, I couldn't be prouder of our work.
@wallingf Thank you for this! I am going to write a followup post on some other papers about strategies to close gender gaps that seem to be beneficial. One important thing to note is that these strategies *also* benefit male students who are also discouraged by competition cultures (just at different rates than women).
There is also really interesting work on what STEM fields with highly technical skills, like biology, have done right to create a more diverse student population. I believe...
I've gone through 3 million manuals in the Internet Archive's collections and produced a "Manuals Showcase", a few dozen manuals that are sure to catch your eye here and there. Readable online, downloadable, and ad-free.
In terms of mixed messaging, something we've seen a lot is reducing public health guidance down to individual risk decisions. This is ineffective for a highly transmissible airborne virus, and has led to confusion and fatigue such that many take zero precautions instead of some.

A personal note:
We at TruthOrFiction.com are deeply sad to announce that we will be closing up shop by mid-October due to funding issues. We are very proud of our body of work and beyond grateful for the years of support from our readers. Thank you so much for everything.
We will be continuing to put out stories and update our older ones until then. The site will remain up, but not active after mid-October 2023.
Thank you all again.

Theoretical physicist by training (PhD in quantum open systems/quantum information), University lecturer for a bit, and currently paying the bills as an engineer working in optical communication (implementation) and quantum communication (concepts), though still pursuing a little science on the side. I'm interested in physics and math, of course, but I enjoy learning about really any area of science, philosophy, and many other academic areas as well. My biggest other interest is hiking and generally being out in nature.
