So, I’m going to have to cross-post this thing manually since micro.blog is turning into an unusable buggy slog that drops photos.
Not so unrelated question: does anybody know of a decent service for cross-posting to bluesky and mastodon that isn’t micro.blog?
Can you imagine the outrage if Mexican soldiers were caught shooting across the border at random US citizens?
After a week on #Bluesky, I just don’t like it that much. Feed is jumbled, features are limited (no edit, no hashtags, no dms, fewer options for filtering), engagement is lower than either here or Twitter.
Shame that a lot of my old academic Twitter network is over there. Not optimal.
#introduction I'm a theoretical physicist interested mainly in the dynamics of quantum matter. This involves on the one hand the development of computational methods at the interface between #machinelearning and #quantum physics such as neural quantum states. On the other hand we explore new and unconventional dynamical behaviors or paradigms in the dynamics of quantum many-body systems such as dynamical quantum phase transitions or active quantum matter.
I wore a mask for the first half of the conference last week, but with Sapporo going through a heat wave, the humidity was pretty high even inside. So… I masked less and less.
Now I have a 39C fever, a developing cough on an over-tight chest, headache and joint pains.
And… my friends… regrets.
Am now splashed on the sofa pondering the irony of getting sick while demonstrating the value of online virtual spaces.
(Covid antigen currently negative, but I guess may not stay that way.)
With record breaking heat for much of Aug in Gulf Coast areas, #GulfofMexico is on fire in the near-short north and northeast.
Gotta hope #Idalia can't take proper advantage of that. #tropicalwx
Want to help Internet Archive's Digital Library of Amateur Radio & Communications? Are you in or around #Oakland, California? Are you available WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 30?
In 2015 #InternetArchive acquired a *massive* collection of manuals, rescued from the closing Manuals Plus in Maryland. The manuals were packed up and sent to San Francisco, awaiting for a day some or all of it would be digitized. That day has come.
We need help sorting the manuals, looking for the radio-related stuff.
It’s time. Clean air can keep schools open…
An Italian study of schools estimated that students in classrooms equipped with ventilation systems or devices that deliver clean air had at least a 74%⬇️ risk of infection than those in classes with windows open.

We retracted our latest published #curl CVE as we no longer deem it to be a curl vulnerability: https://curl.se/docs/CVE-2023-32001.html
CVE-2023-32001 is no longer
@exa @carlos @danielskatz I saw this Dokta project "for researchers to create Docker images for their research projects" mentioned at some point in the past. I haven't used it, so I can't vouch for it, but it seems relevant.

22578 notebooks were written in Python, including 15817 that had their dependencies declared in requirement files
For 10388, all declared dependencies could be installed successfully
1203 notebooks ran through without any errors

I still find old-Twitter and #bluesky better than #mastodon for news, events, and info, but mastodon better than either for fostering medium-length convos. Just me?
Or are there #feditips for using mastodon I'm still not up on? I follow hashtags and ppl, use lists, and try to look at who my followds follow

I posted a video on Instagram about women in computing, and the misogynist trolls are out in force! But I've discovered that the best response to the (dozens of) comments from men I've received along the lines of "CS isn't toxic for women" or "no one is keeping women out of CS" is: "Oh it's so great to see a woman in CS who has had such a positive experience comment on my post!"
The #JAXA English language live stream appears to be here (and seems like it's started but just elevator music so far):

Excited to watch the launch of #XRISM, a #JAXA / #NASA collaborative X-ray observatory mission, with #ESA participation. It looks like it's scheduled to launch at about 8:26 pm EDT (00:26 Aug 28 UTC) according to the information here:

Theoretical physicist by training (PhD in quantum open systems/quantum information), University lecturer for a bit, and currently paying the bills as an engineer working in optical communication (implementation) and quantum communication (concepts), though still pursuing a little science on the side. I'm interested in physics and math, of course, but I enjoy learning about really any area of science, philosophy, and many other academic areas as well. My biggest other interest is hiking and generally being out in nature.
