The earthworms in North America are invaders. There used to be native earthworms, but they were wiped out by glaciers around 10,000 years ago and all the current worms arrived accidentally (via humans) from Europe and Asia in the past few centuries.
https://ecosystemsontheedge.org/earthworm-invaders/
And now global warming is causing “global worming”, as worms spread northwards into a warmer Arctic:

The consequences aren’t clear yet. But it’s a lot of change.

That thing where a community fork of a project, by most of the core contributors, makes you feel optimistic that the new fork is more sustainable

Most projects in the fedi are by people who do it in their spare time with little to no resources.
They still have jobs, families, and the anxiety of making a living in a very bigoted and often unfair labor market.
People get tired, frustrated, and make mistakes because the fedi is a grueling place with little to no recognition for their tools and contributions.
Yes, I believe in decent behavior, but if your morality cannot extend grace to people who are flawed but are trying, you need to ask yourself the point of your morality.
There has to be space for mistakes, sidesteps, and errors in the community. People don't stop being people when you close your browser.
And maintaining this shit is hard.
@mhoye @chozari @CSLee @gvwilson The most positive/beneficial training experiences I've seen in tech have been cohort-based (e.g., a group of managers meets in structured talks to share about their surprises and challenges, led by a highly caring and skilled facilitator).
Barring that, social structural: e.g., a talk that gives evidence based best practice, or a workshop that's semi-structured that people enjoy with communal and active learning elements. Takes a lot of skill and quality.
If you work in a corporate environment and you’ve had them bring in any sort of “mental health day” speaker or a person to talk about neurodivergence, what has been your experience of it? I’ve seen it done pretty badly. It was ill-informed and tokenistic and “oh well, that’s it for another year” I’m sure the HR team patted themselves on their own backs with. I just wonder if it’s any better across the world and in different companies….? Fill me in.
@vicgrinberg Awesome!
Allow me this bit of self-adulation, but I think this is the first (and likely the last and only 😅 ) time my name is explicitly listed on Wikipedia: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/R%C3%B6ntgen-Preis

It is 2023 and in the past 24 hours at least a dozen men have said to me some variation of "women just don't like computers."
I don't think this is even all trolling. I think they genuinely think this. And will cite "actual women I've talked to" as a source. Where are those actual women, are they in the room with us now?
@hosford42 @sidawson @konstantin Yeah, that's one possibility I was thinking of when I referred to admitting "3rd party hosting." Once you have that there are numerous possibilities.
@hosford42 @sidawson @konstantin I think it's not realistic or efficient to expect most people to self-host (even with a VPS). Especially because some stuff people really rely on for important purposes (e.g. managed passwords) and therefore require high availability. In my mind the best thing to do is to help people find solutions that host with end-to-end encryption (that gives the host approximately zero knowledge of the content) and admits self hosting/3rd party hosting (for those who can). In this case (bookmarks), #Firefox meets all the criteria.
Theoretical physicist by training (PhD in quantum open systems/quantum information), University lecturer for a bit, and currently paying the bills as an engineer working in optical communication (implementation) and quantum communication (concepts), though still pursuing a little science on the side. I'm interested in physics and math, of course, but I enjoy learning about really any area of science, philosophy, and many other academic areas as well. My biggest other interest is hiking and generally being out in nature.
