Klára Dán von Neumann died #OTD in 1961.
Hungarian mathematician, self-taught engineer and computer scientist, noted as one of the first computer programmers. She was the first woman to execute modern-style code on a computer. Klára made significant contributions to the world of programming, including work on the Monte Carlo method, ENIAC, and MANIAC I. She was introduced to a lot of her work through her husband, John von Neumann. via @wikipedia
I keep seeing calls to "Increase public trust in #science."
Intentions are good, but this takes time.
Sometimes we're working against decades of negative experiences & misinformation. Or we choose scientists to deliver a message w strong academic credentials but no connection to a specific community. 1/
So, my first impressions after owning an EV for two weeks can sort of be boiled down to "this is the closest a car owner can get to owning a bicycle". There are some other nice things about it that are more car-centric, but this thing where you can just get up and go, you've always got a full tank? That's very nice.
Meanwhile, regulators continue to completely not care about regulating the credit bureaus. Specifically, Experian.
Last summer I wrote about how a ton of Experian accounts were getting hacked when ID thieves would simply create a new account using the target's personal info, and Experian's website would be like, okay, sure, so you're the new owner. No problem. We'll just lock out the old user and give them no way to get back in. Except to, yeah, create another profile. And on it goes.

Well, it looks like Experian is still sitting on its thumbs because someone has hijacked my Experian credit file now.
Fans of Connections, rejoice! Rebooted classic sci-doc series returns with original host
Ars chats with host James Burke about his "connective" approach to science history.
Browsing from some RFID playing cards @foone linked, I ran across RFID ESP CARDS. So amazing.
Until there is a definitive adjudication of the copyright status of LLM training data, it is *deeply irresponsible* to use Github Copilot for open source. I will refuse contributions created with it on any project I'm involved with, as well as permanently ban any user caught sneaking in Copilot-generated code in defiance of this rule. I would strongly encourage all maintainers to take this stand as well. License headaches are already bad enough without secret poison pills being injected.
General information about the launch is here:
https://www.nasa.gov/mission/nasas-spacex-crs-29/
And there are a bunch of places to watch a live stream of the launch, including (but not limited to):
https://www.nasa.gov/nasatv/
https://www.youtube.com/live/Hgj1byn08lM
https://plus.nasa.gov/scheduled-video/coverage-of-the-launch-of-the-spacex-29-cargo-dragon-resupply-craft-to-the-international-space-station/
It sounds like coverage should start at 8 pm EST with the launch nominally scheduled for 8:28 EST, though I assume updated information will be posted at the CRS-29 page linked above if plans change.
The 29th commercial resupply services mission (CRS-29) to the International Space Station launches tonight. Among other things, it will deliver ILLUMA-T, a #laserCommunications terminal that will be used to experiment with communications to the ground via the #LCRD laser communications relay satellite. More information about ILLUMA-T can be found here:
https://www.nasa.gov/mission/illumat/
Launch currently looks like it's scheduled for 8:28 pm. It will be live streamed, and there are several ways to watch it (1/2).

I'm talking about gravitational waves and black holes in today's lecture and I just watched a bunch of the simulations here and now I'm feeling slightly anxious about getting swallowed by a black hole.

(I know, it's not going to happen. But entire stars are getting swallowed by black holes somewhere in the universe all the time! Wild)

A TikTok about Amazon's new $9/month medical service for Prime members has AMAZING comments (in a "laughing through your tears about the U.S. healthcare system" kind of way). A selection:
"I delayed my CPR by 3 days and got a $1 digital credit, can't wait to use it!"
"Got my liver on prime day. Even bought 'used, like new' and saved a bunch."
"I just dropped off my bloodwork at Kohl's."
"Baby came nine months early with same day delivery!"
Educator, scientist & writer Ana Roqué de Duprey was born in Puerto Rico in 1853.
Known as the “Flower of the Valley” for her work in botany, Roqué wrote the Botany of the Antilles, the most comprehensive study of flora in the Caribbean & was instrumental in the fight for the Puerto Rican woman’s right to vote.
Roqué founded several girls-only schools & the College of Mayagüez, later the Mayagüez Campus of the University of Puerto Rico. https://www.womenshistory.org/education-resources/biographies/ana-roque-de-duprey #HistoryRemix #history #science
I’m a Jew and I’m sickened by this. Yes, I was horrified by the Oct. 7 terrorist attack. But Palestinian civilians are NOT Hamas and this is not defense. ⬇️⬇️⬇️
#Israel dropped almost as many bombs in #Gaza in one week as the U.S. did in Afghanistan in one year — the heaviest year.
Gaza is 141 sq miles.
Afghanistan is 252,071 sq miles.
@mcnees I guess the bookstore needs this sign.
Theoretical physicist by training (PhD in quantum open systems/quantum information), University lecturer for a bit, and currently paying the bills as an engineer working in optical communication (implementation) and quantum communication (concepts), though still pursuing a little science on the side. I'm interested in physics and math, of course, but I enjoy learning about really any area of science, philosophy, and many other academic areas as well. My biggest other interest is hiking and generally being out in nature.
