@johnlogic Yeah, I bought mine used a couple years ago, and I'm quite happy with it overall (a few minor complaints). But unfortunately, given its shallow approach angle, low ground clearance, and the somewhat flimsy material covering the underside of the engine compartment (for aerodynamics), it's the polar opposite of an off-road vehicle.

I'm still tempted by the Rav4 Prime. I'd prefer to get a pure BEV for my next car, but the problem is that some of the adventures for which I'd want AWD/4WD would be the exact edge cases where BEV range becomes an issue (for basically all my other use cases any normal BEV would be fine).

#Biodiversity loss is felt more acutely in Hawaii than anywhere else in the US. Eight Hawaiian birds were declared extinct this year, and four others are at imminent risk of extinction.

if you google search "google map embed" you'll see a bunch of free tools for generating google map embeds and they work well except most of them hide a link to a spam or piracy site. if you use a code snippet generator, make sure you look at the code for strange links!

Inert ingredients – like fragrances, dyes and preservatives – in pesticides are not as harmless as their name suggests.

And now research is showing how these added ingredients harm honeybees

I genuinely believe that at this point all academic conferences should at least have a strong hybrid (online & offline) option—even when we aren’t in the middle of another COVID wave.

It makes the conference much more accessible.

@georgetakei this is a good piece on the subject. The author found that even many people features in stories like these eventually landed on their feet. That doesn’t make the college okay — there are lots of aspects of the system we need to fix. But the data doesn’t support the idea of it all being a scam. theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/

Is there anything more delightful than remembering you get to create a new reference entry because you not only made the point that you now need to make in a new piece of work but backed it up in a large study 🥰

We've published over 60k words of openly shared original empirical research projects this year -- that's a book!

Here's an old pic I took of the snow-capped Llullaillaco #volcano, as seen at #sunset from ESO's Paranal Observatory in Chile. The volcano itself sits at the border between #Chile and #Argentina. I love the colour contrast between the ochre expanse of the Atacama #Desert and the white #snow covering the volcano!

Deidre asked me to "toot on the Mastodons" that we just did another episode, this time talking to Jon Millican and Timothy Buck about default-E2EE messaging across all Meta/Fb properties --- the largest E2EE deployment on Earth. Fun chat! I had at least one good question!

Making friends in abandoned places is the best. I met this sweet little cat in the ghost village of Gherdeal in Romania - thankfully, even though the town was mostly deserted at the time, he did have a human to look after him 🥰

@johnlogic My vehicle is a Chevy Volt, which is a PHEV with similar range but otherwise not similar to the Outlander, so unfortunately not what you're looking for.

I did consider something more like what you're looking for one point, but I was disappointed that at the time most AWD/4WD PHEVs had very short electric range, poor gas mileage, had very low ground clearance (which may be fine if your concern is winter conditions on mostly-cleared roads , but not good for other use cases), or else were hideously expensive luxury brands.

I think some of that has changed now, but what's right for you probably depends on price range and exact use case. It sounds like the Outlander electric range got a longer, which is nice, though the gas mileage is still unimpressive and the fact that it has a CHaDeMo charging port is not ideal. In the compact SUV space, the specs of the RAV4 Prime sounded more interesting to me (similar electric range but better gas mileage), and I even saw a Youtube reviews of the performance in light off-road use that were encouraging.
