Thank you Morris Brown College for reinstating its mask mandate as #COVID rates rise. COVID isn't over and schools and workplaces need to stop being in denial and acting proactively to protect their staff and students. https://katv.com/news/nation-world/mask-mandate-reinstated-at-atlanta-liberal-arts-college-due-to-positive-covid-cases-morris-brown-college-social-distancing-pandemic-georgia-university-mask-mandate-reinstated-at-atlanta-liberal-arts-college
All these red states are now boasting about how they are withdrawing from the American Library Association. They aren’t just satisfied with banning books, they want to get rid of the places that keep and lend them, too. The Christian Right is on the march.
Carl Sagan once warned us of the “dumbing down” of America. He warned of a time when our “critical faculties in decline, unable to distinguish between what feels good and what's true, we slide, almost without noticing, back into superstition and darkness...”
That time is upon us. We must do all we can to prevent that darkness from taking hold.
@dangoodin My last job was working at a FIDO2-oriented startup, and I spent a ton of time deep in the guts of FIDO2/Webauthn. Then passkey - the specific scheme of passing private keys around via platform sync mechanisms, not the base FIDO2 signature schemes with their hardware-attested UP/UV flags - carved the heart out of the underlying assumptions. Passkey doesn't count as MFA anymore, not by NIST/FIPS standards, and not by Europe's new PSD2 standard either.
Reporter: You're the first person ever to win two Olympic tennis gold medals. That's an extraordinary feat, isn't it?
Andy Murray: I think Venus and Serena have won about four each.
Assume a nonlinear dynamical system depending on some control parameters.
Assume you want to study if the system is critically slowing down or undergoing some critical transition in general.
Besides studying how autocorrelation at lag 1 and first (two) moments change over time, what would you study? Can you point to papers related to early warning signals?

I'm informed it's the done thing to have an #introductions post on Mastodon.
I've been on Twitter (https://twitter.com/urban_formation) for over a decade, where I've had some amazing conversations ranging from urbanism, mapping, to baking and books with some wonderful people.
For now I'll be cross-posting, testing out these hopefully less polluted waters, to see how it goes.
Thanks to @kerstinsailer for leading the way over here.

I shared this privately before, but I just got the okay to share it in public. The Bluegrass Archive is online with a website and everything. This is a MASSIVE trove of legal live #bluegrass recordings from earliest days right up to now, which you can download and listen to for free. It is one of the greatest achievements of the fan-driven #music archiving community I've ever seen. I contributed a small number of filesets out of the thousands here. #music

@alexwild The American Museum of Natural History 🦕
In 2001, I got to work there as an REU (Research Experiences for Undergraduates). Best. Job. Ever.
I’d arrive before the museum opened & walk through the still dark exhibits. One night, my cohort slept over (before Night at the Museum was a thing).
For me, AMNH will always be a magical place.
Late last week, MSN.com's Microsoft Travel section posted an AI-generated article about the "cannot miss" attractions of Ottawa that includes the Ottawa Food Bank, a real charitable organization that feeds struggling families. In its recommendation text, Microsoft's AI model wrote, "Consider going into it on an empty stomach."

Theoretical physicist by training (PhD in quantum open systems/quantum information), University lecturer for a bit, and currently paying the bills as an engineer working in optical communication (implementation) and quantum communication (concepts), though still pursuing a little science on the side. I'm interested in physics and math, of course, but I enjoy learning about really any area of science, philosophy, and many other academic areas as well. My biggest other interest is hiking and generally being out in nature.
