Hey Y’all!
I’m speaking at Science by the Slice this week on some of the Plastics work I am doing at @RTI_Intl and about the book I co-wrote on Plastics!

SEC suing Solarwinds and its CISO https://www.sec.gov/news/press-release/2023-227

I called Enabran Tain Dumb, Weak, Slow Moving, Lethargic, Gutless & Lazy, a VOLE WHO COULDN’T DO THE JOB. I was tough on him on the Detapa Council, for good reason, so now this Moron says about me, to get even, “his verbal skills are limited.” Well, that’s one I haven’t heard before. Tell that to the biggest Cardassian crowds in the history of Alpha Quadrant politics, by far. Enabran Tain is a LOSER!
The SEC has filed suit against SolarWinds and its CISO Timothy Brown alleging they presented misleading and false statements about the company's cybersecurity risks and practices from October 2018 to "at least" January 12, 2021.
The SEC alleges these statements were made in IPO registration forms, a security statement posted to the company's website and a public 8-K filing made after the 2020 incident.
In its security statement, the SEC claims SolarWinds overstated the security of its password policies and software development process, as well as its policies for determining who has access to what internal data.
Similar misleading statements are found throughout SolarWinds' SEC filings during that time, the SEC alleges.

During the sidebar, the prosecution had to remind Cohen that they had excluded two Signal groups, but that it had been at the defense’s request: one was called “wire fraud”, and another called “fake fraud site”. The defense seemed to believe that a chat called “wire fraud” might prejudice the jury in a wire fraud case, for some reason.

Ohio voters: The extremist GOP Secretary of State is canceling votes, purging thousands of names recently from the voter rolls, right before this important referendum on abortion rights. Make sure you were not among them! Check here for your status: https://voterlookup.ohiosos.gov/voterlookup.aspx
At least in terms of formal recognition, a glowing review in the NYT is about as good as you can get. Thanks everyone-- it all starts with a few of you reading weird comics 20 years ago.

A year back, I primarily used the Fediverse as a Twitter replacement.
Now, let's leap forward to the present. The way I utilize the Fediverse is completely different from my Twitter days. It has become an amazing platform for me to express my creativity and venture into uncharted territory.
I've indulged in crafting a movie trailer featuring a daring chicken on a skateboard, crafted spine-chilling horror stories about mannequins, and even devised this (fake) ad for a futuristic eco-office space.
This Fediverse has unleashed the artist within me like nothing ever has.

Troll/reply guy tried to get me to back down from my unequivocal statement that there's no evidence the 2020 election was stolen, claiming it's better to "meet people halfway" if I want to convince them.
No. As a researcher and educator, I believe in providing clear, accurate information.
The "evidence" that the election was stolen is made up bullshit. To call it anything else is a disservice.
If someone claims that 2+2=5, I'm not going to try to get them to compromise that it's 4.5.
Truly tricky: "What is the net feedback from clouds?"
-Exactly- speaking? The picture is still... cloudy. But not so long ago, whether clouds will be a positive or negative feedback on warming was an open question. Of late, consensus is that changes in cloud locale and type will add up as a positive feedback.
Stale myths still fog our thinking on cloud feedback. We've revised our treatment of this topic; feedback invited!

Google has removed a video posted by academic researchers demonstrating how a newly discovered side channel in Apple's A- and M-series videos can be used to steal a password.
I thought for sure the removal was a mistake, but a Google representative told me the video was removed for violating a term of service barring "demonstrating how to use computers or information technology to steal credentials, compromise personal data, or cause serious harm to others."
The video, demonstrating important research by @genkin, @YuvalYarom , @themadstephan and jason kim, is here:
Just to underscore how arbitrary and patently asinine Google's ToS enforcement is here, two additional videos the researchers posted demonstrating the same side channel remain available.
I wonder how researchers from #projectzero feel about this. Is there any chance any of them can intervene?

Thanks to everyone who has filed issues or submitted PRs for "Software Design by Example (Python edition)" - I just pushed a minor update to https://third-bit.com/sdxpy/. The publisher tells me the book will be available in April 2024, and the ISBN will be 9781032725253. #sdxpy
Theoretical physicist by training (PhD in quantum open systems/quantum information), University lecturer for a bit, and currently paying the bills as an engineer working in optical communication (implementation) and quantum communication (concepts), though still pursuing a little science on the side. I'm interested in physics and math, of course, but I enjoy learning about really any area of science, philosophy, and many other academic areas as well. My biggest other interest is hiking and generally being out in nature.
