An insulin pump which depends on an app working at all times sounds like something that should not make it through approval ⚡
"Three years ago, Apple introduced a privacy-enhancing feature that hid the Wi-Fi address of iPhones and iPads when they joined a network. On Wednesday, the world learned that the feature has never worked as advertised."
Hahahahaha.
The wonderful @caseynewton and @zoeschiffer in Platformer today:
> On Blind, a pseudonymous network for discussing workplaces, current and former employees were asked to vote this week on whether X’s product was better or worse than Twitter’s was a year ago. At press time, 79.4 percent of employees said the product was worse.
This is worth $10: https://www.platformer.news/p/twitter-is-dead-and-threads-is-thriving
This shouldn't need to be said at this point, but given the new Speaker's apparent beliefs, it bears repeating:
While there are weaknesses in US election infrastructure, there is simply no evidence whatsoever that the 2020 presidential election was "stolen" or that technical attacks in any way altered its outcome.
58 of my colleagues and I wrote this shortly after these nonsensical conspiracy theories began to spread two years ago. It remains as true now as it was then. https://www.mattblaze.org/papers/election2020.pdf
Aside: One reason I hate Windows is that so much is point and click and hard to script but I do a lot of Windows stuff at work. So to automate something I looked up the Windows API to simulate mouse clicks. But when I wrote some code it gave me error messages about security issues. So I tried many variations. Little did I know that each attempt caused an email to be sent to the security department at work and thence to my manager...
I know there's a lot going on, but the Senate just passed a reckless amendment to ban mask mandates on public transportation for the next fiscal year.
Shamefully, 10 Democrats voted in favor of a ban:
Baldwin (D-WI)
Bennet (D-CO
Brown (D-OH)
Kaine (D-VA)
Kelly (D-AZ)
Klobuchar (D-MN)
Manchin (D-WV)
Rosen (D-NV)
Shaheen (D-NH)
Tester (D-MT)
Sarah Marzen finds that potential sociological strategies for combatting the spread of disinformation can have the opposite effect, leading to a population with more polarized or chaotic views.

@manualdousuario @dameoutlaw Yeah, I came to the same conclusion about a month ago.

I asked the #Tumblr team if they would consider having Tumblr posts automatically shared to the #Fediverse via #Mastodon (as #WordPress has this feature) since activating #ActivityPub is too expensive.
Their response thus far was less than enthusiastic.
@franco_vazza @j_bertolotti - I used to talk about negative temperature, how inverse temperature is more fundamental than temperature, how inverse temperature is analogous to imaginary time, how you need Planck's constant to give a specific value to the entropy of the *classical* harmonic oscillator, and other more or less well-known facts that are still guaranteed to shock and sometimes outrage newbies.... and also excite crackpots into propounding ideas that sound equally crazy but are, unfortunately, wrong.

Journalists shouldn't be getting the vapors when they learn that governments and companies steer interviews toward reporters they think will provide favorable coverage. They should dig harder -- access is overrated -- and find out why sources are trying to steer the coverage a certain way.
@_thegeoff Ha! That was *exactly* the compound I had in mind! The beautiful but deadly yellow sparkles 😄
Speaking of pptn labs, have you ever tried doing the thing where you put some water in a petri dish, let stand a bit so the currents die down, and then put tiny piles of KI and Pb(NO3)2 at opposite sides of the dish? It's really cool - the salts dissolve, ions diffuse, and you get a line of PbI2 forming where the solutions meet in the middle. Opens up a *bunch* of discussion topics 😊
Another bit of fractal #accidentalArt while filtering chemicals for disposal/recovery. In this case, copper nitrate. Very reminiscent of Escher's hyperbolic images.
Howard Zinn: "To be hopeful in bad times is not just foolishly romantic. It is based on the fact that human history is a history not only of cruelty, but also of compassion, sacrifice, courage, kindness.
What we choose to emphasize in this complex history will determine our lives. If we see only the worst, it destroys our capacity to do something. If we remember those times and places—and there are so many—where people have behaved magnificently, this gives us the energy to act, and at least the possibility of sending this spinning top of a world in a different direction.
And if we do act, in however small a way, we don’t have to wait for some grand utopian future. The future is an infinite succession of presents, and to live now as we think human beings should live, in defiance of all that is bad around us, is itself a marvelous victory."

Theoretical physicist by training (PhD in quantum open systems/quantum information), University lecturer for a bit, and currently paying the bills as an engineer working in optical communication (implementation) and quantum communication (concepts), though still pursuing a little science on the side. I'm interested in physics and math, of course, but I enjoy learning about really any area of science, philosophy, and many other academic areas as well. My biggest other interest is hiking and generally being out in nature.
