What a gaffe! There's an ad for Desantis that appears to compare him to Achilles, apparently forgetting that the wrath of the son of Peleus' was the direful spring of all the Grecian woes! #gaffe
Hello new users, or folks coming back for a second try! If you are turned off by the UI, and you don’t mind paying for an app, give @Ivory or one of the other 3rd Parth clients a try. They make a world of difference.
Fact-checking Elon Musk’s incorrect statement about #farming and #climate change: https://factcheck.afp.com/doc.afp.com.33LP6PR
1) #Agriculture, #forestry, and other #landuse account for ~1/4 of recent annual GHG emissions.
2) Factoring in the broader #food system brings the estimate to ~1/3 of emissions.
3) #Deforestation & other land-use change account for >1/4 of CO2 emitted since 1750.
4) Keeping warming below 1.5 degrees C is impossible without changing food production and consumption.
@gmusser - there are currently many things about Mastodon that make it unable to serve as a Twitter substitute. They are well analyzed here:

If I were a journalist I'd be in a bind. As a late-career mathematical physicist I decided to spend less time on social media and more time thinking. It's been a boon!
Welcome to #Mastodon #Twitter and #Reddit lovelies. Enjoy your stay, in time you'll find a healthier place here. Visit www.fedi.tips for a 101 and feel free to ask away if you are having trouble. Pepper your posts with hashtags to be seen. People like to see who you are so post a picture too! People are kind here, it is a place for conversation and connections instead of billboards. From a recent newsletter: an imaginary humorous conversation between Tolkien and Lewis about fantasy, the writing process, and lampposts.

Lest anyone doubt that Twitter was idiotic enough to release code that would cause a race condition and result in its own users executing a DDOS attack on it, here's the network console readout from Firefox showing all the network requests blasting away.
Of course I immediately closed out my connection because I'm a good person. Oh, but it's the weekend and Evil Sheldon is in control so I kept the party going for a while since Twitter insisted on it.
Unbelievable. It's amateur hour.
Welcome to fleeing Twitter ppl ❤️
If you’re looking for stable spots I will note that Bluesky is currently down, presumably as a cascading result of the exodus, and also it’s…pretty weird over there rn due to bizarre moderation choices. I’m not a “Bluesky Is the Devil” person but I wouldn’t recommend it just yet.
Masto has some real problems, but if you get on a good server it still seems like the best lifeboat to me.
I have a friend who’s joked that the movie about Elon Musk’s time running Twitter could never work as a piece of fiction because no one would believe such a successful businessman would have so many bad ideas about running a company.
Every decision being bad would be too unrealistic. Yet here we are.
In some fields of science, such as physics and machine learning, I’m finding that Twitter has gotten only *more* important in the past few months. My principled refusal to use that platform is beginning to hurt me professionally; I’m missing out on important discussions (including about my own articles). I’ve had some great exchanges on Mastodon and value the relationships I’ve forged here, but, as much as it pains me to say this, it’s just not the same. What can we do to fix this?
For those following the #EuclidMission launch development. It looks like the hashtags #Euclid #EuclidConsortium and #EuclidSpaceTelescope are also in use. It appears that @ec_euclid is the official account for the consortium.
For anyone else like me using a #Yubikey or other #webauthn #2FA in #Firefox who just had it recently start prompting for a PIN when it shouldn't be, apparently the is a bug, and the workaround here helped me:

I'm not sure if this is an issue with the most recent Firefox version for #Linux or just the current #linuxMint package.
Theoretical physicist by training (PhD in quantum open systems/quantum information), University lecturer for a bit, and currently paying the bills as an engineer working in optical communication (implementation) and quantum communication (concepts), though still pursuing a little science on the side. I'm interested in physics and math, of course, but I enjoy learning about really any area of science, philosophy, and many other academic areas as well. My biggest other interest is hiking and generally being out in nature.
