@al_merose Hi! Turn all of those keywords and phrases into hashtags. You can edit your toot to do so. Use LOADS of hashtags. Follow LOADS of people and you can also follow hashtags (click the hashtag in the web app and hit the plus button) - don't hold back from following like you might have on Twitter. You want to follow lots of people here.
These days I'm primarily using #Firefox on my #Linux desktop (specifically Mint), and I'm curious if #passkey might be a reasonable option for me to use on sites that support it. I have an #Yubikey that I already use for #FIDO #2FA on sites that support it. I also have an Pixel phone with a titan chip, but I'm running #grapheneOS on there, and I'm not sure if that will complicate matters. Any relevant experience on either the phone or desktop front or pointers to relevant information would be appreciated.
Near as I can tell, it sort of sounds like passkey can work on Linux but maybe isn't supported in Firefox yet?
In this thread with @johncarlosbaez I was mentioning how when I first encountered Category Theory it seemed like little more than a curiosity (for my purposes, as a physicist), even though mathematicians seemed excited about it.
I had almost the opposite experience with Nonstandard Analysis (i.e. the hyperreal numbers), in the sense that I bumped into this notion, read a bit about it, and it sounded potentially quite useful. Physicists tend to talk in terms of infinitesimals anyway, so a framework where that could be done rigorously seemed useful, and I was curious if it might provide nice ways to think about other things such a path integrals or even renormalization. But the only mathematician I talked to about it dismissed it as basically a curiosity. I believe the way he put it was that it was "just a trick to avoid an extra quantifier in in proofs."
Now I'm curious if that is the consensus among the #physics and #mathstodon folks around here or if people see it as a practically useful tool.

Latest #FOSSAcademic blog post is a short summary of the #MastoSymposium, which just wrapped up at the University of Warwick:
https://fossacademic.tech/2023/06/25/ASMupdate-Warwick.html
The big takeaway: the need for continued discussions about research ethics. (A conversation that is all the more needed as we contemplate the #Meta issue).
NOTE: I've set up my blog to show responses to this post as comments, unless you set your privacy to followers-only or DM. CWs, edits, and deletions will be reflected.
I'm now seeking grad students and post-docs:

I'm interested in working with folks who want to study #AlternativeSocialMedia, including the #fediverse, from a critical perspective.
York U (in Canada) has some generous funding now, thanks to a major grant the university received (I'm affiliated with the grant).
Please do reach out if you have questions! Boosts appreciated.
This is it. I'm on Mastodon, and I should have moved sooner.
Hope to find most of the people and artists I was following on the dead bird's social media (🙄 ), in what will without a doubt be a less toxic environment!
Shell is still trading Russian gas more than a year after pledging to withdraw from the Russian energy market.
Hi there! Finally made the journey over from Twitter. Im going to reintroduce myself in hopes of expanding my network on here!
My name is Sami and im a neuroscientist. My graduate research helped characterise how S1 neuronal network communication becomes altered with aging, is sexually dimorphic, and how these changes can influence gait.
I just started as an assistant professor at Colorado State University, where I teach neuro, phys, and pharm for veterinary medicine and undergrad students. ♥️
I previously migrated, but failed to stick to it. I hope now to spend more time here and less time on Twitter. That's my intention. So I guess with that, here's my #introduction #infosec since I hadn't done one.
I'm Ovi, I have been hacking since I was a teenager and worked in information security for over 10 years. As a young man looking for the cutting edge hacking wisdom, I got sucked into working for government & defence in offensive security. Then moving on to working for Microsoft and other private sectors as a security researcher, mostly focused on 0day, APT and exploit research / threat hunting. After a number of years doing that I left to spend some time doing independent bug bounty/pen-testing. After becoming aware and frustrated with the destructive patterns government/private sector I decided to dedicate my time to civil society and digital rights space. I now do independent security research within the civil society sphere and the occasional bug bounty. I love reverse engineering, finding bugs and exploit development. You can find out more about me and my work on my website https://0x0v1.com.
I live offgrid on a farm next to the sea. Away from the computer, I like to connect with nature and the land, hiking, growing food and the occasional surf.
Great to be here and hope to connect with more of you soon!
@Lobrien @gmusser Some influential ML folks took a stab at Mastodon during the November wave, but I think almost all have drifted back. So less visibility in broad discussions as bridges like nitter have been blocked off.
To George's question, I think the solution lies outside of Mastodon. My half-formed hypothesis is that the solution is domain-specific aggregators websites that can support discovery/ranking and point towards the conversation (maybe on Mastodon, Lemmy, etc).
The problems with #Twitter & #Reddit are not coincidental or unrelated. Capitalists will always see you as a thing to be exploited for as much profit as possible.
If you like it here, think of this as your gateway drug into free, open source alternatives to an increasingly worse dystopia of extraction and exploitation.
Whenever there's a new wave of people coming to the #fediverse and #mastodon in particular, I'm reminded of this Simpsons clip where Marge is trying to enjoy a Rubik's cube but her family keeps pointing out things she's doing wrong and thus taking all the fun out of it.

Be kind to newcomers. Beyond the basic rules of any given instance, everything else are optional conventions. Let people enjoy #fedi however they want.
Don't be preachy (he says in a preachy tone 😅 )
@gmusser @jaztrophysicist need to get the American Physical Society to help push the migration forward, and stop using the bird site.
If you are #new to the #fediverse and look for colleagues from a wide array of academic disciplines, you might want to have a look at these individually curated (opt-in) lists collected by @hendrikerz:

I maintain the list for #sociology, which can be found here: https://trutzig89182.github.io/Mastodon-Sociologists/ @sociology #Introduction

For the Body-Mass-Index (BMI), it took only 190 years to get to step 5:
Like @Popehat’s rule of goats and @mmasnick’s Streisand effect before it, @pluralistic’s enshittification has become a succinct and useful way to identify an increasingly relevant phenomenon.
Theoretical physicist by training (PhD in quantum open systems/quantum information), University lecturer for a bit, and currently paying the bills as an engineer working in optical communication (implementation) and quantum communication (concepts), though still pursuing a little science on the side. I'm interested in physics and math, of course, but I enjoy learning about really any area of science, philosophy, and many other academic areas as well. My biggest other interest is hiking and generally being out in nature.
