@Amimoregore @SarraceniaWilds @BlackAzizAnansi there are problems with hashtags:
1) they are not designed to, nor can they replace what an algorithmic feed provides
2) client support for hashtags is inconsistent.
3) hashtags require near-perfect use to be useful. So that’s a failure before you start.
Hashtags are useful, but they are not magic.
@bynkii @BlackAzizAnansi Dont get me wrong, I want it to happen. Im here for a reason. But if this community keeps mistaking people ekeing out a living with capitalism, and scream-bragging how HEALTHY it is to not have any of the features that are useful and important to people that are not them, it will simply never happen.

Worldcoin offers users $20 worth of a new cryptocurrency in exchange for scanning that user's retina and adding them to a database. Their business model is mass surveillance and cryptocurrency wrapped into one.
So far, the launch has been a disaster: https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/richardnieva/worldcoin-crypto-eyeball-scanning-orb-problems
Sam Altman, the founder of Worldcoin AND the CEO of OpenAI, says that the rise of AI is why we need tools to verify who is human.
Yes, Sam is selling us one tool to "protect" us from the harm his other tool is causing.
#PCAST is seeking public input on nutrition research, as part of a new working group on using nutrition science to combat diet-related diseases. The key questions being focused on are
1. How can the United States obtain the greatest return from federal investment in nutrition research?
2. How could/should research-based interventions for primary and secondary prevention of diet-related chronic diseases be introduced into federal programs?
3. What can be done to assure equitable access to the benefits of the federal nutrition research investment?
Further information on the public call can be found at
I have a horrible feeling that a lot of people look at forest fires, floods, record heatwaves, etc., and think, "This is how it's going to be from now on."
It's not. We're still pumping CO2 into the atmosphere, where it's accumulating.
The future is going to be much, much worse. Unless we take drastic action now.
The Texas Department of Public Safety purchased access to powerful software from a little-known Israeli surveillance contractor, capable of locating and following people through their phones. https://theintercept.com/2023/07/26/texas-phone-tracking-border-surveillance/
The US government faces legal restrictions on how much personal information it can gather on citizens.
But technology has significantly increased the threat to privacy and civil liberties by giving the government access to sensitive personal information beyond what it could collect through court-authorized surveillance.

Happy Rotating Black Hole Day!
Roy Kerr submitted his breakthrough paper describing the spacetime around a rotating black hole #OTD in 1963.
Physicists had been searching for decades for this solution to the field equations of Einstein's theory of general relativity.

"Describing [RFK's] views as ‘controversial,’ I think, is dishonest. They’re not controversial. They’re false. He’s not spreading controversial views, he’s spreading lies. And so the framing matters enormously, and that’s something that I foresee being a huge, huge issue in the 2024 campaign."
Agreed!
Some key distinctions made by journalist Seth Mnookin in this sharp interview. (He wrote a book about the anti-vaccine movement in 2011.)
What do I do, personally, to avoid passing on the credibility deficit? How do I try to confront this?
- I try to be deeply intentional about checking whether I have evidence for skills, or am making loose assumptions about people's expertise
- I read deeply in the research literature on these effects. For me, understanding the world even in its adversities is somehow healing and undoes the gaslighting.
- I practice directly disagreeing with people's unspoken judgments of me. This takes courage.
The structure of spacetime around a Kerr black hole leads to lovely and complex orbits.
Check out @duetosymmetry’s app that lets you visualize the orbits of a photon outside a rotating black hole:
Hi, #physics / #math / @academicchatter , anyone know of any general-purpose multidimensional surface intersection finding methods similar to the simple 1d root finders? (so finding the 3D surface where a scalar function of the three dimensions is 0)
Elon Musk deleted a fact check on Twitter that contradicted his tweet about Bronny James and COVID.
Mr. "Free Speech" is really Mr. "I'll Censor Anyone Who Disagrees With Me"
He then deleted my tweet about that.
Theoretical physicist by training (PhD in quantum open systems/quantum information), University lecturer for a bit, and currently paying the bills as an engineer working in optical communication (implementation) and quantum communication (concepts), though still pursuing a little science on the side. I'm interested in physics and math, of course, but I enjoy learning about really any area of science, philosophy, and many other academic areas as well. My biggest other interest is hiking and generally being out in nature.
