Fuck shingles is really kicking my spouses ass. It’s been over a week. We discovered that those who’ve had Covid and are over 50 are 15% more likely to get shingles within 6 months of infection. It’s a horrible case too. Another fucked up thing to worry about along with long covid. Please for the love of fucking god wear an N95 mask, and help us quell the spread of Covid-19. #MaskUp #LongCovid #disabled https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/covid-and-shingles#relationship

Found this yesterday and I likes it, I does. #repair #repaircafe #fix #fixer

This is excellent work, and a vital read for everyone who cares about this platform. The key thing I wish everybody understood is that it’s possible to make a network that prevents harms while still being fun/playful, and without hazing new users. Too many people seem to resign themselves to the idea these are intrinsically linked. https://mas.to/@kissane/110793942888550843

well, this was an unexpected morning. my company just announced that it will be closing business at the end of this month and everyone will be terminated.

on a personal level, i’m 9 months pregnant and scheduled for a c-section in less than a week, which puts me in a particularly tough as i know i’m gonna have to take “leave” time.

any leads and connections are super appreciated: i’ll be looking for #malwareanalysis, #threatresearch and #threatintel roles

@Sheril @lisamelton i love things like this. Another example: Cleopatra lived closer to our time than she did to when the Great Pyramid was built.

We live closer in time to Tyrannosaurus rex than it did to Stegosaurus.

Two new reviews of my book on Invisibility appeared yesterday! First, James Gleick reviewed it in The New York Review of Books: https://www.nybooks.com/articles/2023/08/17/nothing-to-see-here-invisibility-gregory-j-gbur/?lp_txn_id=1475711

Entomology never fails to surprise. We found this metallic Phanolinus rove beetle in an Ecuadorian cloud forest.

As Bedford points out, the opposite is also true:
"A good sustainability and quality of life indicator: the average amount of time spent in a car."

(Elevated time car-commuting time also turns out to be a reliable metric of social isolation and general life dissatisfaction.)

Reddit calls for “a few new mods” after axing, polarizing some of its best

Will Reddit get quality replacements? "Not a snowball's chance in hell."

And it wasn't that long ago!

Joe Biden was 24 years old during Jim Crow.

Remember when movies like Ghost, Pretty Woman, and Kindergarten Cop came out? More time has passed since Kindergarten Cop was released and now, than passed between Jim Crow and Kindergarten Cop. 🤷🏿‍♂️

This week, I went over to Bluesky and asked people who'd left Mastodon why they left, and lots of people told me. I grabbed the replies and crunched them and wrote up a summary. I think it's really interesting and often kind of wrenching.

It is unacceptable to ban workers from wearing the protection they need to do their jobs safely. Every state in the country must pass laws like those in California that protect the right of employees to mask.

“The size of the World Wide Web”

I know it’s only one metric, but it sure does look like Bing is having serious problems and that the size of its index has collapsed. Probably not so coincidentally, a bunch of websites like Techdirt have disappeared from it. https://www.worldwidewebsize.com/

I don’t understand why any author pays the exorbitant Nature open access fees ($11,690!) when they can legally generate a view only PDF of their piece to share.

Authors, please post your ReadCube links!

#CMSPaper 1226: the fact that #neutrinos have mass raises questions that the #standardmodel cannot answer. This paper searches for predictions by one of the explanations for that problem, specifically for the simultaneous production of undiscovered heavy Z bosons and #majorana neutrinos. It is a #nullresult and the most sensitive analysis ever for this combination of a Z' and Majorana neutrinos (for an extensive range of neutrino masses).

BUFFALO: I'm on my way to you this weekend! In between pickets, I'll be at the Helium with my latest hour of standup!

Folks in western canada… anyone interested in a place to camp for a week? We have a site at Hidden Valley in the Shuswaps Sun to Fri July 30- Aug 4. We need to stay in #yeg for family/medical reasons and have run afoul of a very restrictive cancellation policy. The site will fit a tent trailer or large tent.
Message for details.

I had no idea "subscription bombing" was a thing, but fyi:

- it's annoying and nearly impossible to stop, but
- the REAL purpose is to bury legitimate emails warning of fraud.

someone had added a bank account for transfers to our actual bank account. it was pending approval. to avoid my seeing the email from my actual bank about this, they've signed me up for a shitload of newsletters, websites, and services
