Let's all support the REI union, which is suing the "coop" owners for violations of labor law.
The union wants publicity about this for now.
It may be a relatively small gesture, but IBM's halt in advertising on the deadbird site is still progress.
Meanwhile, Musk gets more and more vile, as he uses his platform to boost right-wing extremism. He hates journalism, and he amplifies enemies of democracy.
Yet journalists continue to pour their work into that poisonous place, thereby directly supporting his business.
Shame won't change their minds, obviously. I'm at a loss to know what will.

I'm sad to discover that John Clauser is a climate crackpot and continuing the unfortunate tradition of physicists wading into subject areas they don't know much about, assuming they understand them, and making a fool of themselves.

In Episode 3 of #MoralRepairPodcast, @Wolven talked to us about how insurance companies have come to use #AI to determine who receives what care.
That's what's going on in this story:

Experiment over! Instagram did take down the AI-generated image of Taylor Swift in a Nazi uniform pushing a Jew into an oven only after we published this article! Instagram still hasn't replied to our email requesting comment! 🤡 https://www.404media.co/will-instagram-remove-this-ai-nazi-taylor-swift-image-after-i-post-this-article/

(I still have the photo of my old MIT whiteboard with 10+ ideas for Hitomi proposals ... Will be passing some of them for my group now!)
Occasionally I'm annoyed at or disappointed by Mastodon. Then I remember that some of the principle alternatives are:
1. A site run under the de facto control of a government involved in widespread repression and ethnic cleansing,
2. A site run by a guy increasingly promoting views aligned with genocidal ideologies, and
3. sites run by an organization implicated in facilitating an actual genocide.
With that perspective, the comparative issues of Mastodon seem pretty manageable.
"We're going to bring back the advertisers" is becoming Twitter/X's version of "Infrastructure week."

The new episode of Serving Up #Science tackles “expiration dates” & why so many of the “sell by” & “use by” dates on #food labels are meaningless while contributing to our enormous food waste problem + #ClimateChange.

Big "I'm not a teacher" flags, and I made that point to them, but they've been struggling with the experimental setups sometimes. And that's my job, and *I* struggle with it sometimes, moving from a diagram of a setup where it's just "resistor", "capacitor" without telling you WHAT SIZE isn't easy until you've learned the subject, which they haven't yet by definition. The setup they'd been trying to use was fine, the resistor was just too small, so it all discharged way too fast to measure.
Signal is a nonprofit. But what does this mean in practice? Today we do something most tech co’s avoid: talk money. What does it cost for Signal to play in a lane dominated by billion $ corporations, while rejecting the surveillance business model?
This resonates. Maybe you shouldn't use Google's tools if you don't have Google's problems.
@engarneering Mike and Ike is iconic, and every specialist has a copy, but it's a steep climb.
For beginners, I recommend Sutor's Dancing with Qubits, Eleanor Rieffel's algorithms book, or our own online course Understanding Quantum Computers. Then follow up with Preskill's lecture notes, our Quantum Communications textbook, or maybe Peter Shot's own lecture notes, though I haven't had time to review them yet. All of this will help with Mike and Ike.
Theoretical physicist by training (PhD in quantum open systems/quantum information), University lecturer for a bit, and currently paying the bills as an engineer working in optical communication (implementation) and quantum communication (concepts), though still pursuing a little science on the side. I'm interested in physics and math, of course, but I enjoy learning about really any area of science, philosophy, and many other academic areas as well. My biggest other interest is hiking and generally being out in nature.
