Dear #webdev: No one born this year is filling out their birthdate on your form. Why in the fuck does it default to the current year?
@odddev @jackbrewster
Right. But which year would be the best default? 40 years ago?
Of course, a way to avoid all this is doing as Kai's link suggests: avoid using a calendar widget at all, limiting to only empty text fields.
@nek @jgg @odddev @jackbrewster Exactly. In some few cases, it might be helpful preselecting the minimum legal age for the offered service or product, depending on local law and regulations. But in general, date of birth is a special input and shouldn't be confused with other date type inputs.
@jgg @odddev @jackbrewster that’s what number fields are for. On mobile they will only display the numbers keypad. Calendars only work when you need to see the week or month context. They help visualise how far the date you pick is from today, the weekday, etc. None of that is needed for a birthdate.
