I just saw an interesting fiction-writing post by @paulkater about exploring your main character's birthday, which made me realize that I almost never see anyone have a birthday in the novels I read.

Pat and I disagree about whether this is an outrage.

I think it should be a plot element far more often since in any decent-sized cast, someone should have a birthday.

He thinks it's the equivalent of routine chores and is rightly ignored.

Story wise, what does a birthday say of a character? Unless your book is about of astrology, or it is a special kind of date, seems pointless to me. It is only a bunch of random numbers. You may as well give a SSN.

Yeah, I know most of the data given in descriptions of people and places is mostly irrelevant anyway.

Pretty sure you can build great stories around a birthdate, but I don't think they are interesting by themselves.
