When I was about 7, I was so far ahead in reading skills compared to my peers that I had read all the books in school available to someone my age, and had even read all the books one level ahead of me. My school stopped me there, though, since the next level *after* that would start containing books about WWII and the nazi occupation of The Netherlands, which they deemed kids my age not ready for. I was very sad, but those were the rules.

My parents lost their shit. They were so mad about this.

My parents considered this a massive hindrance to my development, and if I wanted to read those books, I should be able to. One year was not going to make a difference, and WWII and the nazi occupation left a massive mark on Dutch society, and is hugely important in our upbringing. The exact details are hazy - age and all - but I think the school refused to budge.

My parents just bought the books in question for me. 😂 Don't fuck with my parents.

My teachers made an exception for me. But older kids books were mostly written on the XIX century, so no WWII or nazis there. Only white explorers killing black cannibal savages 🙈
