I think it's quite possible that there's just no way to portray Oompa Loompas -- a race of little people pulled from their native land and held captive as the workforce of a factory -- in 2023. They're just too inherently problematic, and there's no way to do a story about Wonka without them.

If Gru can have minions, Wonka can have Oompa Loompas. They are nearly the same, story wise. You only have to make sure they are extremely weird and funny, and clearly not human.
