A clump of Osage Orange trees (Maclura pomifera) in a brushy woods. The grapefruit-sized fruits are sometimes nibbled on by wildlife, but don’t seem to be a preferred food.

About the fruit (explains what we see in the photo):

“The fruits are enjoyed by squirrels and other small mammals that tear them apart searching for the seeds buried deep inside. The latex sap found inside this plant keeps most herbivores like deer and rabbits away.”

Wow, it is written that in general it is better only as a remedy of folk medicine, only for external use.

> However, despite all these advantages, the fruit of maclura orange is poisonous, so it is strictly forbidden to use inside in pure form. When grinding fresh raw material, you need to use disposable grates, so that the stuck particles of the plant do not accidentally get into food. Prepare preparations of maclura need gloves, because the juice of the plant strongly stains the skin, poorly washed off and can cause an allergic reaction on sensitive skin.

It’s a very special tree (with super-powers!).
