I recently sent someone a DM on Mastodon, thanking them for some of their artwork, which they provide publicly and for free.

That person than took a screenshot of my DM and posted it publicly. Just because they were happy about it.

Re-posting DMs without consent, or worse screenshots of a DM, even with good intentions, is not OK. Not OK.

@louis somebody initiates contacts me out of the blue, unprovoked, does not get to dictate to me how I use that information. DM is not the same as PM -- repeat for those unaware DM IS NOT PM ON MASTODON, there is no expectation of privacy unless otherwise stated and agreed upon first. Think about what you just did -- you hit this person up and without even giving them a chance to decline, imposed your own rules on the conversation and expected them to follow it.

@GabeMoralesVR When we say there's no expectation of privacy for DMs, that only means that admins can read them (i.e., don't send passwords or things you'd rather be kept secret), not that the other person is allowed to make them public if they so wish.

The only rule imposed on the other person is the implicit assumption that DMs are for their eyes only, because, otherwise, you would have used some other visibillity level.

No matter how you try to defend the other person's actions, they betrayed @louis's trust and that's inexcusable.

@josemanuel @louis THis is not true, not only admins can read DMs, there are *lots* of ways for your DMs to get read by others on Mastodon.

Again, DIRECT MESSAGES are not PRIVATE.

@GabeMoralesVR Read my post again. Nobody is saying they are, but it's certainly wrong for the recipient to make them public, and even more so in screenshot form (that is, without mentioning the other person). DMs are just conversations between the mentioned parties that don't involve anyone else, and that's how they should remain.

In any case, don't worry. I will never send you a DM, so it's ok if we disagree.
