Have been wrestling with it all night and can get neither the gdm3 nor the lightdm GUI to work with my installation on this old laptop.

Tried purging, updating and reinstalling both, to no avail.

I am going to give some other distros a chance now.

@dimi My sympathies and good luck. I've had my share of Linux desktop adventures but have not been back.

For alternatives, I have heard good words about Pop!_OS.

Also surprised to see MX Linux still on top of the DIstrowatch page hit ranking.

@kemuri I keep trying every year and almost always struggle so much I ultimately return to . I think I've had one pain-free installation out of ten.
