Seeing lots of new (and familiar!) faces this morning. Hi friends!
Haven't had coffee, so no coherent thoughts but here's my #cat Farrah welcoming you to the fold.
You'll be seeing a lot more of her when I'm back in the US in February.
Bring Feature Requests to Your Instance Admin
Addendum to do not assume anyone's UI/UX, you might see someone on another instance mention a feature you do not have. Kindly ask your instance admin if the feature is available, and if not, could they add it. There may need to be an instance-local discussion about it, but that's part of the experience!
DO NOT ASSUME ANYONE'S UI/UX IS THE SAME
ok I have made this mistake like three or four times and I have to write it down to remember it
DO NOT ASSUME ANYONE'S UI/UX IS THE SAME AS MINE
The #fediverse has many different clients and even with the same client like #mastodon different instances may be using different versions and with different extensions.
I think I will continue to share #tips as I discover them, but I have to remember to refrain from bringing up feature speculations with users from other instances.
Next speaker for #biodata22 is Johannes Koster (@johanneskoester) with "Rapidly configurable, portable, interactive visualization of arbitrary tabular results".
Tables are a central part of many analyses, but often are not *just* a table (e.g. relationship, visualization, etc.). Needed a consistent way with low overhead to take tables + relationships + visualization definitions and create portable outputs.
Solution: datavzrd #Rust (similar to "Data Wizard") https://github.com/koesterlab/datavzrd
Just to show I have other interests besides media and Twitter, I thought I would share a post from my personal blog, about a rabbit hole I went down -- one of my favourites, involving would-be European royalty, who claim that they are prince or duke or duchess of some imaginary kingdom or other. Classic European nonsense! If you like this sort of thing, I have a whole newsletter about it, called When The Going Gets Weird -- you can find it at newsletter.mathewingram.com https://mathewingram.com/work/index.php/2022/11/09/classic-european-pseudo-royal-nonsense/
A short example of how to update a replication package.

I got to make an emote for my favorite study streamer, OOPMarie.
Check her out for a chill and upbeat time.

music...
I don't talk much about music on the other site, but why not start here. Anyway, the YouTube algorithm (see, not *all* algorithms are bad) served this up for me last night, and this is an astoundingly good jazz cover of the Beatles. I'm a fan of Grace, but had never seen this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EvYw0OEVXNk
I built this tool a year ago but I feel like Mastodon folks would like it
The "Weird Old Book Finder"
Type in a search query, and it'll find one randomly-chosen public-domain book that matches the query -- and present it for immediate reading: https://weird-old-book-finder.glitch.me
Why only one book? To prevent the paradox of choice! Just *start readin'*
Can't promise every book will be weird, but most are

This was a search for "mastodon"

Good morning, Mastoworld. Enjoy a giant steampunk robot elephant. These are from the Isle of Machines in Nantes, that uses old shipbuilding tech to make marvels. #SomethingBeautiful
