Excellent overview of #privacy, #security, and #accessibility on #Mastodon, by @themarkup https://themarkup.org/the-breakdown/2022/11/21/we-joined-mastodon-heres-what-we-learned-about-privacy-and-security
Highlights:
🔸 Check your server’s privacy policy, as each server has its own rules.
🔸 Watch out w/DMs. Direct messages are not end-to-end encrypted and can be read in full by server admins. Also, anyone you tag in a DM will be able to view it.
🔸 Remember to turn on 2-factor authentication.
🔸 Add alt-text to caption your images and help make this place accessible for all!
📣 NEW MODERATION RESOURCE 📣
@btanderson The opening set was decreed by @jerry. We are working on some transparency reporting tools to start publishing how many reports we dealt with, what actions we took, etc. there’s no publicly available tool for that yet. So we are coding it by working on the APIs.
So you're just getting started in Mastodon huh?
Here's a neat thing. On the web interface you can search for a Hashtag.
Same as you can on Twitter.
Something like #Ukraine, for example
But on the search results, see that little user icon on the right? Click it and you'll follow it as if it's a user!
New posts with that tag will arrive in your home page, even if you don't follow the author yet
We run a well oiled machine.
Step 1, @eliza complains: https://twitter.com/mycoliza/status/1592248742060920832
Step 2, we fix it: https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/104469
Step 3, it lands on nightly: https://play.rust-lang.org/?version=nightly&mode=debug&edition=2021&gist=043ea14f2d5e54113fc40b5b175d18ed
From now on, obligations introduced by trait bounds will check whether the type is longer than 50 chars, and if it is, dump it into a file so that the CLI output doesn't become an unreadable mess.
What's cool about Mastodon supporting RSS is that I'm now thinking about embedding a feed of my toots on my website, something people used to do but I would not be caught doing with the Twitter API
finance elon crypto tesla
I am probably totally wrong about this, but I have a theory that the "crypto winter" was sparked by Elon's offer to buy Twitter on October 3, 2021.
As of Sept 30, just a few days earlier, Tesla owned USD 1.83bn worth of BTC. We don't know how much crypto Musk himself owned, but he has repeatedly said he personally held BTC, ETH and dogecoins.
@mmasnick No, this still does not work. It will read out as "mathematical bold small <x>" and stuff. Unicode and screenreaders are not site specific, they will read the same regardless of location.
Markdown support would help this significantly, though, and I hope that comes soon.
For now, I would still avoid using unicode tricks for text flourishes.
mastodon growing pains - tech side
> Talking to our ISP like... well you see the actual speed is fine... its just... the "amount" of internet... well... we need a lot more of it.
As #mastodon grows it will have to solve much of the same problems Twitter had to deal with, such as bandwidth expansion and storage expansion. Curious where the limits of volunteer efforts end up and what novel schemes of business models are born and which ones are sustainable enough to survive.
Is there a mastodon instance manager circle discussing these difficulties? A conference of some sort?
Over 2000 FPS on kmscube, over 120FPS on simple scenes in OBS, and Xonotic is now pretty close to a solid 60 FPS! The new allocator works!! 🚀🚀
And we found and fixed some Mesa bugs while we were at it~ ✨
Next up, compressed depth buffers!! 💫
Writing instructions for users is so hard... even when you think you've explained what you need clearly, you always miss some ways it can be confusing!
We're slowly improving the VT Social about page and info request warning templates. If you have any suggestions or you found the process confusing, please let us know how we can improve! ✨ #noxp
🚀 Xonotic on Ultra settings works!!! 🚀
It turns out the reason it was running out of RAM was just... texture compression! @alyssa just enabled BCn/DXTn texture compression, and now it doesn't even use 4GB of RAM with the highest texture quality! ✨✨
I didn’t like irc due to toxicity & harassment so I left, despite having & making tons of friends there.
I didn’t like Facebook, especially the racism, so I stopped posting there.
I have posted a couple hundred posts on Instagram, thirst traps & cat pics & food mostly.
I never liked Twitter either, but reporters would use it to find me & it served to help get my expertise out in the news.
I tried posting a family holiday meal toot here hashtagged with Thanksgiving & was immediately informed by someone who doesn’t even follow me & isn’t on the same mastodon instance that I should have put a CW on it in case my food pics upset a vegetarian. I deleted it.
Honestly I don’t know if I’ll ever post that much anywhere ever again. I don’t have time.
It seems immediately tone-policey here. And block-splainey. At least that’s been my experience so far. Honeys, I know how to block & mute. I’m likely much older than you & have deep lived experience in being harassed online from the very first places one could be harassed online. Please don’t give me unsolicited advice. Ever.
It’s just as well. I’m very tired & I don’t see the point of posting in a brand new place for misogyny to find me, harass me, then pile more well-meaning or ill-meaning explainers-of-how-the-Internet-works Reply Guys into my mentions.
I’ll post whatever the fuck I want, where I want, & I’m not obligated to respond to anything.
If you need to reach me for my work, email info@Lutasecurity.com & if you’re a member of the press, press@Lutasecurity.com is where I will always direct you, even if you have my Signal number.
Why?
Because I’m a CEO & a mom & I do not have time to route & schedule your requests. Boundaries are healthy & I’m happy to remind anyone of mine.
Happy Sunday & may your boundaries be respected by all.
@tschak Check out #rust Rust Before Main https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q8irLfXwaFM
As part of trying to simplify down to a very small app to focus on what is happening before main, @ryan_levick (I think that is the right Ryan) actually shows how to super optimize the binary size and why certain things "bloat" it.

This, from the Secretary of Defense, is excellent:
"The outcome of the war in Ukraine will help determine the course of global security in this young century. And those of us in North America don’t have the option of sitting this one out"
