really enjoyed reading this interactive guide to flexbox, I learned some new things about flexbox (like how it interacts with `min-width` which has confused me many times in the past)

In Duck Hunt the NES Zapper worked by blacking out screen & drawing white blocks around targets when you fire, for a couple frames. The diode in the Zapper detects the change in light intensity and tells the computer if it’s pointed at a lit target. #gamedev #retrogaming

Coming from a #Haskell background, I'm very sad that #Rust makes it so hard to avoid mutable references.

I don't want to mutate things in place, I want to write functions that consume their arguments and then return an entirely newly constructed result, but that will often land you in trouble in Rust. This is not about performance, I mean you will find it difficult to even structure your programs.

For example, there's an entire cottage industry of *solutions* around updating a mutable value wholesale, i.e. where you compute the replacement by consuming the original value.

Ploutos 5.0 is out, our @github reusable workflow for packaging #Rust Cargo projects as DEB & RPM packages and Docker images.

In addition to some breaking changes and fixes, the optional new `artifact_prefix` workflow input can be used to namespace produced GitHub Actions artifacts so that existing artifacts by the same name as those produced by the Ploutos workflow are not clobbered / used by accident.

If you are looking forward to work on a major product, you have no options other than inheriting an unmanageable giant mess. If lucky, you can be positioned on big rewrites or slightly more green field new projects, but you are rarely that lucky. On average, whatever you touch has unmanageable debt and unbounded footprint.

Hi #MastoCats!

A new day start, and I'm wondering: how do you meow in your language?

In french, we usually do "Miaou"
And you?

@danluu If it is true that "most people want [something]", that's a legitimate feature request which cannot be disregarded on the ground that the model is "not growth"

I want ranked feed because topical recommendation on Twitter is in my experience a faster and more accurate way to find new accounts to follow, and the top tweets are a faster way to catch up with what happened in the recent 24 hrs. Importantly, they don't need much tinkering to work. Topic recommendation may depend on how niche a topic is, and I have noticed top tweets burying lower engagement stuff from accounts I follow, but I can change to linear when my mood and purpose change.

Sure, those properties are driven also by their usefulness for engagement, growth, and ads. But I don't run the site, I don't care about those, and I guess most users don't. Being engaging has benefits independent from ads. I wish more important stuff be more engaging as well, so more people are aware, such as your articles.

One of the things that's made it easy to find communities whose discussion I want to see is the linear feed. This is a stark contrast to new social apps I've tried, e.g., Clubhouse, where my feed is dominated by high engagement stuff I don't want.

I understand why companies push that stuff; looking at Twitter's experiments, you get more growth/$ when you switch users who've chosen linear timeline back to ranked timeline.

Fundamentally, this is why most apps don't even offer linear timeline.

Ashby: "In this book I use the words “very large” to imply that some definite en, with definite resources and techniques, and that the system (is in) some practical way, too large for him; so that he cannot observe completely, or control it completely, or carry out the calculations for prediction completely. In other words, he says the system (is) “very large” if in some way it beats *him* by its richness and ."

Moved instances because: Figuring out which Mastodon server to join is akin to IRL for Black, Indigenous, People of Global Majority (BIPGM) women/femme:
Are they safe for us? Will I need to assimilate? Do I need to code-switch?
Will they care more about the dominant comfort & civility than the truth?

As a woman of global majority (vs Woman of colour) MD who speaks about gendered racism, ableism, humanities in medicine, hard to find a safe space. Hoping I will be welcomed here! Thank you.

Last week, I took a day off to care for sick family. My daughter noticed I wasn't locked away in an office and took the opportunity to ask what it was I actually do while I was working.

"I write code on the computer."

What's code?

"I write down instructions so a computer know what to do."

Like when you press a button on your phone and the garage opens like magic?

"Yeah, like that."

Wow. You're magical. Like Elsa in Frozen. You make magic.

I think I'm going to go rewrite my resume now ;-)

@TheRealTraceyDelaney @david_colquhoun @celesteh I was talking to my mum about this the other day - she attended a small primary & grammar school in the late 50s in Somerset (UK) and discovered that while she thought the school was predominantly white, there was actually a 2nd class for PoC who had different playtime & were never seen.

She was horrified as a child & it's haunted her knowing that it was allowed to happen.

All the fellow Mastodon instance admins and mods, take this! You are gonna need it when another 1m users signs up this week.

I know folks yell a lot about offline backups.
Please normalize yelling about offline jump servers too.
It's always good to have a break-glass box.
