Remember how #twitter doesn't show your replies in your tweet feed?
In #mastodon , you can differentiate between "Public" and "Unlisted". You can reply with the setting "Unlisted" if you don't want your replies to clutter your profile. E.g. courtesies like "you're welcome", or if the reply is only relevant in context of the thread.
To do that on the web client, click on the globe icon below the compose box, and choose "Unlist".
You can also change the default to "Unlist" or "Followers-only". To reach that setting: scroll down the right side bar, Preferences > Other > Posting defaults > Posting privacy.
The latest #Rust release is a blockbuster—but I feel slightly guilty that I’m more excited about let-else than GATs. 😅

#Tips On "content warnings".
Sure, they can be used to prevent people from having accidental PTSD attacks due to your content, and that's important.
They can ALSO be used to keep timelines clean and non-fussy and to give choice back to the end user as to what to read.
Think of them more like a break in a blog post that serves to keep the front page readable.
It's a simple thing to do to keep the community valuable for EVERYONE.

The totally eclipsed blood red moon passes behind the antenna on the Empire State Building in New York City, Tuesday morning in New York City #bloodmoon #LunarEclipse #beavermoon #newyork #newyorkcity #nyc

This morning’s total lunar eclipse as seen from Medina County, Ohio, USA. The lunar eclipse cycle takes a long time and with temperatures in the mid30s (°F) my feet were freezing and I was shivering, even in my winter jacket. Worth it! #Astronomy #lunareclipse #TotalLunarEclipse Photo by James Guilford.
@unseenjapan Japan looks very conservative because of the LDP’s grip on power at the national level (thanks to small well-organized quasi-religious groups like Sokagakkai, Unification Church and Nippin Kaigi). When you look at Kugikai in Tokyo, politicians are a lot more diverse because the electoral rules do not favor the LDP (a lot more female pols in Kugikai and a few are transgender). Wish that the national parliament more accurately reflected diversity in #japantoday.
For new followers here: I usually stream on Wednesdays and Fridays at 15:00 JST / 06:00 UTC (and going for many hours ^^;), though I'm taking this week off to catch up on some IRL stuff! So I hope to see you next week~! ✨ #noxp
I really like this short article by @timClicks about "Creating a priority queue with a custom sort order in Rust"
It shows a pattern that I use all the time: Creating a custom tuple type as a wrapper and slapping some methods on it with traits.
This is what you want from inheritance, but with composition and without all the caveats.
Ok I.E friends. I am pleased to announce our inaugural class of moderators.
I was completely blown away by the response to my call for help this morning. I have hundreds upon hundreds of responses, DMs, and emails in response to my post. So many, in fact, that I haven't actually been able to read them all yet. But I will.
Our moderation team is now:
@ScottMortimer
@reg
@jett
@cirriustech
@dnsprincess
@SecureOwl
@apiratemoo
@ClevVenger
@paco
I sincerely appreciate their willingness to help make I.E and the fediverse at large, a better place to be.
Mobilizon v3 is out today!
With a federated search engine for events and groups, many sorting options, map view, a new home page...

So, in the human eye, there is an optimum pupil size. If the pupil is very small, diffraction leads to lower resolution…
If the pupil is too large, higher-order aberrations lead to lower resolution.
The sweet spot varies from person to person (it's roughly around 3-5mm — the pupil typically can vary between 2-8mm in an average eye)

Most of the meat is in the second half of the video. The interviews and case studies are precious records of frontline experiences, but it is also clear that both the sampling and the analysis are biased.
The sampling is clearly biased towards instances more friendly to minority groups. The limited visibility due to the network structure and the moderation tools is beneficial for privacy and safety, but I fear it also makes sampling across the federation gaps harder.
The analysis is clearly biased against centralized SNS providers, with barely any credit to their achievements. It nods to the positive correlation between the moderator-user ratio and the difficulty of moderation, but did not develop it to its logical destination. If 1 moderator to 9000 users is already resulting in a "black hole for reports" situation, what is the ratio for Twitter? How do they manage to keep up?
The case study of Gab is a good showcase of available moderation tools, but goes barely any deeper. The central phenomenon, "islands", is mentioned only in passing as a precursor to Gab's defederation.
The study is important work, but it is also clear that more work is needed to understand where the Fediverse is situated in the SNS concept space, and where we may want to take it.
