Friends eagerly waiting US #election results-

Be very skeptical of quick takes & early speculation. A good deal of 24/7 media “coverage” is currently being filmed & written for clicks and ratings, but there’s little substantive new information. We likely won’t get a sense of how it all played out for a few days.

I feel, as part of my initiation into this space, I must talk about my love of #Medieval elephants.

Yes, you heard me. You see, though bestiaries were very common in Western Europe, elephants were not.

So things like this happen.

"SO... lion body... got it, cloven hooves, okay, big ears and dead bird eyes... long snake face... PERFECTION."

Free advice for people who aren't paid to watch cable news: Turn it off, log out, read a book or something, see where things are when you wake up in the morning. You aren't learning anything useful right now.

For techies who want to read the ActivityPub specs

Was re-reading and this paragraph made me laugh.

> Is this technically 100% correct? No. But if you were the kind of person who cared about the difference between JSON-LD and JSON, you'd probably be writing your own spec right now instead of reading this article.

I'm really not worried about Mastodon scaling issues at all.

When I left Twitter in 2008, we had roughly twice as many users as the current combined Mastodon network, all running on one MySQL server that had the same specs as a high-end 2013 MacBook Pro, plus roughly 10 web servers and 5 queue servers.

To be fair, growth wasn't as rapid, and we had local-infra advantages over federated systems, but these problems are solvable and I have no doubt will be fixed soon.

*Hugops to all admins!*

Fediverse is an append-only log if you federate with the wrong people (you do). Good luck!

It's that time of year, and I absolutely love my MS Paint sweater

but I wonder: are there more retrocomputing sweaters out there?

A cryptobro DMed me to ask if I wanted to join his mailing list.

I spent slightly too long making this to send in reply.

Sad to hear psephologist (election scientist) Sir David Butler has died at 98.

Here are his last theee tweets when he wonderfully, unexpectedly joined Twitter for the 2017 general election.

There is election coverage tonight on television so let’s just all post nice relaxing pictures of our pets or favorite giant cartoon animal character, okay?

The child who swatted me hundreds of times, issued bomb threats to commercial airlines, and DDoS'd PSN and XBL during Christmas of 2014 now has an international warrant out for his arrest.

This time, he extorted tens of thousands of psychotherapy patients, threatening to release their private therapy notes if they did not pay a ransom.

But check out how he got caught... He accidentally uploaded his entire home folder to the darknet forum he was using. Whoopsie!

This not at all spoiled kitty has a big heater running just for her, and she still keeps yelling for more service! #cat

Often times people ask me, "But how do I learn about how ActivityPub works? Where do I get started?"

Friends! The ActivityPub spec itself is here to help you! There's a really lovely story-driven tutorial about ActivityPub right at the top of the spec in the "Overview" section! w3.org/TR/activitypub/#Overvie

Give it a read! I tried really hard to make it easy to follow, and it has beautiful illustrations from @mray!

I've seen a lot of people asking about DMs here. I wrote an article about this today, but thought it'd be more useful to just say it in a post: Privacy is not the purpose of DMs. DMs are a courtesy to your followers. You’re communicating with another user directly because the information is of no value to anyone else, and there’s no reason to flood other people’s timelines with irrelevancies. Do not use DMs to discuss personal or sensitive information. (Use Signal).

There should be a dashboard of waiting times for all polling stations on . All eyes should be on a map showing where the waiting times are longest. Instead of obsessing over incomplete numbers, it is much more important to make sure every voter who shows up gets to vote.
