Random NaN fact: add, sub, mul, div, and sqrt all have ways to return NaN from non-NaN operands.

So, I finally dove in and wrote some replacements for some legacy C database functions, using #rust and #pgx.

The regular functions were an extremely pleasant experience. The aggregates, less so, but far better than C. Better yet, these functions now have proper tests!

I've yet to determine if there's a performance gap.

Wow… I guess it’s really time to export my Twitter archive, things truly look like they’re going to collapse.

meta cw discourse

while individual instances might have explicit moderation policies related to CWs, the fedi-wide consensus has always been:

* CW the stuff you think should be CWed
* don't expect strangers to respond well to demands (including about CW topics)
* but actually think about CWs systematically
* and know that if you don't CW certain topics, the people who want those topics CW'd won't follow you (and might even mute or block you)

client-side filters for generating CWs (coming in masto 4, already part of clients like fern for years) resolve the tension between stuff you don't want to CW when posting about & stuff that you want CW'd when it shows up on your TL, and i hope more clients & instances begin to support it

No matter how many times I walk up to an eruption deposit the sheer size of them still blows my mind. I promise you I didn't realize the pun I just made until I wrote it.

This is in the Pumice Plain at Mount St. Helens, the area devastated by the May 18, 1980 eruption. Erosion has been digging a path through the rocks and ash deposited during the hot violence of that day. Volcanologist for scale.

Seeing lots of new (and familiar!) faces this morning. Hi friends!

Haven't had coffee, so no coherent thoughts but here's my #cat Farrah welcoming you to the fold.

You'll be seeing a lot more of her when I'm back in the US in February.

Bring Feature Requests to Your Instance Admin

Addendum to do not assume anyone's UI/UX, you might see someone on another instance mention a feature you do not have. Kindly ask your instance admin if the feature is available, and if not, could they add it. There may need to be an instance-local discussion about it, but that's part of the experience!

DO NOT ASSUME ANYONE'S UI/UX IS THE SAME

ok I have made this mistake like three or four times and I have to write it down to remember it

DO NOT ASSUME ANYONE'S UI/UX IS THE SAME AS MINE

The has many different clients and even with the same client like different instances may be using different versions and with different extensions.

I think I will continue to share as I discover them, but I have to remember to refrain from bringing up feature speculations with users from other instances.

Next speaker for #biodata22 is Johannes Koster (@johanneskoester) with "Rapidly configurable, portable, interactive visualization of arbitrary tabular results".

Tables are a central part of many analyses, but often are not *just* a table (e.g. relationship, visualization, etc.). Needed a consistent way with low overhead to take tables + relationships + visualization definitions and create portable outputs.

Solution: datavzrd #Rust (similar to "Data Wizard") github.com/koesterlab/datavzrd

Trying out a small language change:

🙅 “what did I accomplish today”
💁 “what did I contribute today”

I don’t need to achieve, to belong.

Just to show I have other interests besides media and Twitter, I thought I would share a post from my personal blog, about a rabbit hole I went down -- one of my favourites, involving would-be European royalty, who claim that they are prince or duke or duchess of some imaginary kingdom or other. Classic European nonsense! If you like this sort of thing, I have a whole newsletter about it, called When The Going Gets Weird -- you can find it at newsletter.mathewingram.com mathewingram.com/work/index.ph

A short example of how to update a replication package.
