It’s our final night at the beach until March. Just about every night we are here, she coaxes me to come sit with her on the balcony, 8 floors up, while she listens to the ocean and smells all the smells.
It can be so easy to miss the nuances of their personalities. Their loves and fears, the subtle inflection in their barks that mean different things. The way they try to communicate and get frustrated when we don’t understand.
Feeling good tonight. I hope your weekend is good. Be well.
Thought I’d do a little thread on the basics of #git and some #infosec tidbits:
Very quickly - git is the most popular tool used to manage source code, and while used by services like GitHub it is a seperate thing
Some quick terms:
Repository - this is where all your code is stored, as well as a .git folder that keeps track of your history and other essential bits of info.
Commit - a snapshot in time of your files, referenced by the SHA1 hash of the state of the repository when someone chose to commit those files.
Branch - a split in the timeline, you can branch off a particular commit and continue adding to it without changing other branches.
Pull request - this is something specific to remote hosting of git repos, once someone has made a branch they can ask to merge it into the main (or another) branch.
Now for the fun tidbits:
- Commits have an author, which has details like email address and name, this can be set to anything and is not verified in any way. For example, I can create a malicious commit pretending to be someone trusted and push it to a remote, and it will be (nearly) indistinguishable from a commit by them. In order to mitigate this, sign your commits with a GPG key!
- Websites with accidentally published .git folders - these are super juicy, while the current state of the repository may not have any credentials or leaked, a .git folder contains all the history of the project, people often leak an API key once and remove it in the next commit. It’s still there in the history.
Let me know if I’ve missed any fun bits!
*sadly goes to reset the counter to 0 on the "days since I saw someone shit on the existence of light themes" sign*
I think on average I see this like once a week.
I cannot see dark themes at all. And it's a hell of a thing to see this hostility not just to a software option but to my own existence and qualities as a person who uses this option. Like I've seen people say you have to be a psychopath to use light theme, which is an awesome way to double up on the ableism!
Before #Caturday ends, here's these two little arseholes giving off very judgemental vibes.
"Karma is when your medical society actually tweets about abortion rights"
Sharing our
(@arghavansallesmdphd @futuredocs) latest paper which looks at whether medical societies made a statement on abortion after the leak, and the final SCOTUS decision.
What did we find?
In the 2 weeks after, out of 186 societies:
9.1% of societies spoke up following the leak.
38.5% following the SCOTUS decision.

This week was 40 days after Bloody Friday, when the Islamic Republic of Iran’s agents attacked Friday prayer in Zahedan, killing ~90-100 people. Zahedan is the capital of Sistan and Baluchistan, a majority minority province. Though they make up 3% of the population, they account for roughly 1/3 of the total deaths in this revolution (over 300 total people have died so far).
This is a humanitarian crisis, and the world is largely silent.
How to pick up #cat like a pro
TLDR: Squish them into your body, give them enough support across their body
I am receiving a decent amount of engagement at the moment, thus the best chance to introduce my second #cat , Louie the #Savannah.

I feel like this shouldn't need to be pointed out, but the slowness, app not connecting, http 503 errors... this is not normal behavior around here. Mastodon has absorbed like a million new users in the last 2 weeks and is run by volunteers. Please be a little patient while the admins catch up (AND TIP THEM!). #twittermigration #patienceisavirtue
Yes that was me! Thanks for the shoutout and welcome!
In art / fandom news — DeviantArt has introduced an AI image generator into their site based on their "catalog". You must opt out, via a FORM, not just a checkbox, to have your artwork made unavailable for this tool. The checkbox that exists is only for third-party tools.
Artists, if you have art there and don't want your art included, get on top of this. I am a supporter of AI tools for personal use and inspiration, but this is vicious.
