My personal Mastodon "punch list"
Policy/support:
- some kind of readily available legal and policy resources for small and medium size instance administrators. It's only a matter of time before someone is served with a subpoena for user data. How will you react? Do you have a DMCA contact? Are you complying with various international user data protection rules? And so on.
Before a crisis is a better time to work this out than during a crisis.
My personal Mastodon "punch list"
@mattblaze this is really important. I moderate a subreddit and I had a SLAPP brought against me at the community for allowing criticism of a business. Reddit’s legal team fought against the 40+ subpoenas but film freeway let go with names and they’re still being harassed. Mastodon better get their house in order because this kind of thing happens all the time.
@cwebber Can't call it Webmail. Disney acquired the trademark for "Web" as part of the rights to Spider-Man.
A big reason I'm having a hard time sticking to Mastodon is the lack of a quote-tweet feature. Yes, I know why the creator excluded it, but not having it means that I have no straightforward way to build on things other people say. All I can do is:
- boost/RT as-is, which strips it of any context around *why* I want to boost it
- "LRT", which also loses context and is a terrible UX for followers
- reply, which is visible to a different audience altogether
Just a reminder to not buy a commercial VPN on Black Friday unless you’re a corporate IT admin buying a concentrator, or you’re trying to watch geolocked kdramas. They provide you no added security. You’re welcome! #cybersecurity
>§#Ukraine's leaders will have to be "far-sighted" to secure peace, #Pope Francis said on Friday, suggesting that #Kyiv would have to make concessions to end the war with #Russia.
Maybe missing it, but why are these calls always directed at Kyiv? Russia could put on their big boy pants and be far sighted and offer concessions to end the war too, you know
Why do folks always talk about Russia like its an inanimate force of nature like a hurricane? They have agency too.

This is one of my favorite pictures. It feels like it was taken yesterday… but it was taken in a Paris public garden nearly a hundred years ago. Everything feels modern: the composition, the casualness, the daring clothes, haircuts, and accessories.
The colors are original: this is an #autochrome, using the first process for color #photography invented by the Lumière brothers in 1903.
The women are unknown, but I can't help wondering how they fared a few years later in nazi-occupied Paris.
I’m well aware of the pros/cons of centralized vs decentralized community systems. I’ve been doing this stuff since the 90s. My only point (at the moment) is that federation, in itself, does not solve community problems. Only human community leaders solve those problems. I’m just as excited about the fediverse as everyone else is. Just don’t pretend the tech itself solves anything by default. Trust me, we made that mistake last time. I want us to do better this time.
Like my friend @fraying said, *federation doesn't fix the problems of community management and moderation*, but it is certainly *is* a tool. It is also an exceedingly blunt one. And like many tools because it is powerful, it can also make it easy to ignore or set aside the depth, context and difficulty of decisions.
This platform confuses me - but maybe it’s good to have my brain stimulated. It’s certainly better than interacting with the darkness at the Other Place. Here’s my chicken on my couch #chickensofmastadon
“Many residents said the biggest surprise was seeing how many people had stayed in Kherson during the occupation. The streets were empty and life stopped at 3pm. … After the liberation, it turned out that many had remained in the city all along.” https://on.ft.com/3AMfyQe
The Akashinga (The Brave Ones) are a team of all-female, anti-poaching rangers in Zimbabwe, and one of the best community driven conservation models we've ever seen. Selection is exclusively available to unemployed single mothers, abandoned wives, sex workers, victims of sexual and physical abuse, wives of poachers in prison and widows and orphans. They're trained by a former Australian Navy Diver and Special Operations Sniper, and managed to arrest 80 poachers last year
