The alarming reports cataloged a failure to serve kids with disabilities at the Northwest School of Innovative Learning, a private school designed to cater to Washington state’s most vulnerable students.
Despite the complaints, the state took no action to force changes at Northwest SOIL. Instead, it allowed the school to stay open and tap a pipeline of taxpayer money. https://www.propublica.org/article/therapeutic-schools-northwest-soil-invisible-washington @ProPublica w/ Seattle Times
My personal Mastodon "punch list"
When livejournal went into the nosedive from which it never recovered, a bunch of code base clones attempted to fill the void. By far the most carefully planned and executed of the LJ replacements was dreamwidth, still up and running to this very day. Here's a writeup of advice from Denise, a founding member of dreamwidth, speaking one admin to another, on what legal issues to anticipate and how to head them off before they become a problem. It's divided into discreet sections and comes complete with relevant links and detailed instructions about what to do with those links where applicable.
Denise is not, to my knowledge, a lawyer, and is not pretending to give that kind of legal advice. Just someone with a ton of relevant experience to speak from, who was good enough to write it up specifically for the use of Mastodon admins.
Let me tell you a secret:
"kind" and "angry" aren't antonyms. One doesn't exclude the other.
A lot of folks these days will tell you otherwise. If they can be kind and angry, they open themselves up to an idea that terrifies them: "responsibility".
It's important for you to hold, in your heart and in your head, that "kindness" is a quality, and "anger" is a reaction.
If you're truly a kind person, avoiding anger should be damn near impossible.
No matter how bad you think Twitter is or is becoming, it's like a cute fluffy cuddle version of the absolute trashfire that's trivially accessible there.
Long post
@atax1a This is all dead on. I probably could have pushed the same-domain migration over the finish line, but the risk/value proposition tilted against my favor so I didn't.
Mastodon is absolutely a complicated cluster of services all of which have their own distinct subject matter and nasty little gotchas. Sidekiq on its own is a thing that could fit into the job description for one person, leaving everything else to others-- at least at scale.
Pleroma did a better job at shrinking the scope of things but you still needed to know how nginx did local caching, and how S3 works if you go that route, on top of your DB. GtS is better still from my experience so far. A one line caddyfile and a DB is all you need.
You're still juggling a terminator, the software, a database, and optionally an S3 for media, but it's shrunk down to the scope of "Any web app really"
Shit storms from defederations and traffic reflection attacks via strategic posting are both massive problems that have, by and large, been ignored.
But honestly I think the biggest problem AP has right now is, like email, just how much of it was left undefined in the initial pass and now has been shaped by consensus of the largest/first actors.
GtS is currently having A Problem where they do HTTP Sigs right, but they need to do them wrong sometimes because Mastodon. Mastodon also carked namespacing of AP Activities already, and we're stuck with that.
someone on Twitter asked why we think ActivityPub sucks from a protocol and implementation standpoint, and we're porting it over here with minor cleanups:
several things — from a server perspective, the most popular implementation requires that you become an SRE for Nginx, Rails, Postgres, Redis, Sidekiq, and possibly ElasticSearch. IMO, these (especially postgres) are nontrivial services to maintain over the long term.
once you pick a piece of Activitypub-compatible software, as far as we can tell, you're locked into that particular branch — you cannot simply export a Mastodon database into the GotoSocial implementation, you have to set up GotoSocial brand new, and make everyone refollow you
protocol-wise, we keep finding shocking ways in which activitypub is worse than email; the biggest pecadillo (IMO) is that if i follow 100 people on 3 servers and make a post, my server has to make 100 requests, one per follower, instead of 3 posts, one per server
the way the protocol works is that if two large instances defederate each other, it causes a notification storm for everyone downstream that can overwhelm smaller instances
so! if you run your own, you pretty much have to become a cache SRE, web-tier SRE, DB SRE, queue SRE, Rails SRE, you have to know how to secure unix systems, mitigate attacks, and if you're responsible, you have to do replication and backups.
sure, Docker has made it so that you can stand up all of this easily, but long-term maintenance? are you really confident that you know what you're doing here? Oh, sure, you've offloaded a lot of this to your cloud provider, but then you're now dependent on that provider continuing to work. Unless you're a large corporation with a secure contract, your cloud provider most likely doesn't care about you.
in short, standing up our own mastondong is signing up for a whole lot of Actual Work that we don't really want to do just to talk with friends, and we absolutely must stress that we both worked for twitter for 6 years and run our own **email server* for 21*
Whiteness⟨™⟩
My rants do not belong in someone else's comments, so here is a shiny new thread of my own.
I am thinking about Whiteness as a Thing & the escape velocity it takes to escape the gravity of that complacency.
I've spent a lot of today seeing a lot of (fellow) white people get very upset at PoC for mentioning their whiteness.
It's the same fucking compulsion as when TERFs object to being called cis, btw.
They think they are default, normal, unmarked.
2005: Rupert Murdoch paid $580m for Myspace.
2009: he sold it in $35m.
2008: Bebo was sold for $850m, to AOL. The founders later bought it back for $1m. It was regarded as one of the worst deals ever made in the dot-com era.
2013: Yahoo paid $1.1bn for Tumblr. 2019: they sold it in $3m.
Elon Musk paid $44bn for Twitter. If history has taught us anything it's that this isn't going to end well… when there wasn't a viable business model in the first place.
