Happy Thanksgiving all!!! I’m thankful for my new (and old) #science and #neuroscience friends her on Mastodon. It’s working well for me, and the few conversations I’ve had on here so far have been deeper and more civil. That’s makes me happy. 🦃

I've seen a few folks join Mastodon and complain that it's too difficult to follow people on other servers, with the cutting and pasting and whatnot. But @bramus has now created a neat Chrome extension (or bookmarklet, if you prefer to go that route) that let's you avoid all that hassle.

#preLighter Nicolaes Hyun-Kee Min covers a beautiful #preprint from HenryDeBelly@mas.to and team (Weiner, Turlier, and Bustamante labs) which provides a simple and widely applicable #model of how tension propagates. One that not only considers membrane rigidity/fluidity, but the underlying actin cortex as well.

⚙️⚙️ My co-first authored paper on the discovery and characterization of a new brain wave (oscillation) called “splines” is open access in Cell Reports!

〰 These oscillations are high-frequency: 130-160 Hz, occurring at the peaks of theta rhythms in the retrosplenial cortex (part of the brain essential for successful navigation). Splines occur during REM sleep and navigation. They become more powerful + more coherent across the hemispheres as a mouse or rat runs faster.

In this work, the team of researchers show the importance of the guanine nucleotide exchange factor, ARHGEF18, in regulating endothelial cell alignment in the direction of flow. 🌊
