This thing is crazy. From Steven Pinker. It hurts my eyes too look at, I actually have too look away. But the center white is the same brightness/color as the radiating white (that's with the black). I think our minds just recognize it as the sun, but still create a physical response. Even after 15mins, I still can't look at it for too long.

Shootings

A miracle happened that day. Not, tragically, for the fallen but for many others saved as a result of this vet being there. Reminds me of the 1996 Dunblane shooter Thomas Hamilton who was late, held up in traffic, and aiming for morning assembly.

Good writeup on the guy who stopped the Club Q shooter. https://www.seattletimes.com/nation-world/army-veteran-went-into-combat-mode-to-disarm-club...

I would love to do a in the future but I don't want to participate as a programmer.

I would like to try doing the music of a game one day. It would be an amazing experience as I have almost 0 knowledge about the subject.

If someone ever wants to do something like that, don't hesitate to contact me o/ The result will surely be rubbish but, hey, we never know.

@sp6ina thanks for putting your story out there. I can only hope things improve for your family and can see the great love that is there reading between the lines.

I have wished a bird would fly away,
And not sing by my house all day;
Have clapped my hands at him from the door
When it seemed as if I could bear no more.
The fault must partly have been in me.
The bird was not to blame for his key.
And of course there must be something wrong
In wanting to silence any song.

Happy Feast Day of C.S. Lewis

I can't think of a more important intellectual or religious influence in my life. He was one of the most important critics of Scientism too.

He died the same day as JFK and, in the moment, his passing wasn't really noted. But I think his legacy will be much greater.

One thing that’s a bit of a hassle with Mastodon is that you can’t immediately follow people on other instances.

You have to copy the username and search for it on the server that has your account.

To make this easier, I’ve created a little bookmarklet. Press it, and you’ll be taken to the same account as viewed from the masto host you are on.

(Change the value of `MY_MASTO_HOST` in the code to your mastodon host –not URL– and you’re good to go)

Muscles grow by increasing the size of their cells, not by increasing the number of cells. In contrast, the cells of the immune system and body mainly increase by reproducing in response to infection.

These cell divisions have a limit. Telomeres, at the end of chromosomes, shorten with each division until the cell stops dividing or dies.

#Covid19 shortens Telomeres. Yes, immune systems will age.

@Geefeconomie@mastodon.green well, since you ask, I’m here for those random connections that improve your intellectual and spiritual life, I guess. Great things came of a 12-year presence on the 🐦 site for voluntary work in depression awareness and suicide prevention. I met a whole raft of lovely committed people along the way whose families had been affected in some way. I made probably my best film, with an actual cast and crew. Since then, I’m normally both. These days I have less time on my hands due to striving for excellence in my job, but the ethos of the qoto instance attracted me as although I tech others I ALWAYS learn from them too. I have a couple of ideas on the back boiler that may come to fruition through networking with like minded people. One is to help homeless people learn to code and the other is a wearable to detect dangerous mood swings before they occur. I had an informal first offer of VC funding for the second one, but the by the pandemic hit and my investors boards were exposed. Oh and I wrote a book in lockdown. And it’s teatime so I haven’t proofed this post. Blessings on all who read it. 🙏😎

@aodh I followed you after that lovely story but alas, no oranges to give. I also sing in a choir, but have never received any fruit inducements.

I ran into a new member of a choir I sing with on the bus last night. We hadn't interacted much up till then. We got chatting (she is lovely!) and when there was a silence, without a word she produced the most perfect round orange I've ever seen from her handbag and gave it to me. Just complete unexpected orange. I gratefully accepted it and I've just eaten it. It was delicious. I'm not sure what the moral of this story is, but when life gives you oranges, it's a good day 🍊

@Emma_78@mastodon.ie Welcome Emma. I’m only two weeks old myself so we can compare notes.

Cujo finally taking me out on today. I’m guessing there’s a hashtag for it.
