This weekend the LSP was on a retreat in Deauville. We discussed everyone's research interests, open science, and the ways to improve our lab, and enjoyed a nice cold walk on the beach.

New paper shows (as many papers before) that code that is shared will often not run. This is to be expected - few of us had training in this. But if you share code, go through checklists to prevent the most common mistakes. From the paper: nature.com/articles/s41597-022 For some extra suggestions, see my textbook chapter on computational reproducibility: lakens.github.io/statistical_i

ERC grants are the most prestigious funding schemes for basic science in Europe.

While most successful ERC applications are guarded as business secrets, this site includes a series of openly available proposals: ffg.at/europa/heu/erc/publishe

@fgilardi @academicchatter Interesting question. I guess it also depends on what each of the respondent mean by "read" exactly. On my side, I skim through many papers each month but I give a careful read to max 6-10 papers a month (i.e. reading line by line, annotating, and indexing the paper in my database with some useful metadata).

One of the hard things about immigrating to Germany is the general lack of positive feedback. I was born here, but I'm still very American, so I give positive feedback & it makes ppl uncomfortable sometimes.

This from the Max Planck Society's guide for foreign scientists:

Well, there is fraud in scientific publishing and then there's comedy.

This absurd figure was found in a published paper and reported on the bird app by Josemari Feliciano. It's too funny not to share here. Can you tell what is wrong?

Hint: This is NOT a "T-test" 😂

Here's one of his works that I particuarly like (more here: plelievre.com/projects/phd-exh). It reminds me of the "parquet deformations" composed by William Huff.

Last week Pierre Lelièvre succesfully defended his PhD in art and machine learning "Pictorial Composition — Modeling, Perception & Creation". The defense was followed with a superb exhibition of his artistic work plelievre.com/projects/phd-exh

@Hirstrj @lakens @chelseaparlett @arcaldwell49 @guyprochilo @FrederikAust the concept of the smallest detectable effect size given a sample size is my favourite. That’s what’s making the meaning of (statistical) power really hit home with my students.

@paraic @bookstodon @linguistics let me add to the list : The Embedding by Ian Watson which is based on Chomsky's generative grammar, and The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russel where the main character is a linguist and leader of an expedition to alpha centauri.
There is also a very nice linguistic textbook (unfortunately in french) illustrated through many exemples from the sci-fi litterature : "comment parler à un alien"

Oh oh oh, wait for it!
