The Handmaid’s Tale was one of my pandemic binge watches, and it was surprisingly (and scarily) relevant in 2020. I’m re-watching now, and somehow it’s even more terrifying post-Dobbs.

I should probably clarify that the quotes we were adding were things we actually said to each other or overheard in the hall, not famous quotes from the Algonquin Round Table or something. Part of the charm of re-reading the board was remembering the context of the quote and the reactions to it.

In my college dorm room I used to have a "quote board" on my wall—a white posterboard with some markers nearby—where my friends and I would write down funny or pithy quotes whenever they occurred. I continued that practice for a few different housing situations after that because it was always nice, when one of us was feeling down, to go read the board and get inspired or just have a laugh. These two quotes that came up today won't mean anything to anyone else or sound particularly profound, I suspect, but if I had a quote board handy today, I would add them to it.

"objectively beautiful"

"he is the personification of goodwill"

Perhaps I will hang a board in my office space. 🤔

(Also, I don’t want to get into a whole thing, but this is a common situation — asking a question, and wanting to share the answer with commentary and thanks — in which I really miss quote-tweeting.)

I’m on a mission to stop using the adverbs “just” and “simply” when talking to other people.

I find that using those words can make me sound dismissive and belittling; trivializing of the struggles that someone is going through.

Instead of “Why don’t you just do X?” or “You can simply do X”, I want to say “Have you tried doing X?”

@anildash @philgyford OK now I need to spend time over the holiday break fixing the MovableType database that my ISP broke (again) with its latest server move. :-P Or move to a different platform... 🤔

Moving the Mastodon app to the spot previously occupied by the Twitter app on my phone's Home screen was a good idea.

Mississippi is America’s Blackest state. It’s mostly white MAGA Govt annually rejects $1B in Federal $ for Medicaid. Now the last hospital in a rural part of MS is about to close—devastating Black & low income people.

MAGA racism & cruelty on full display. Like the old saying goes. Republicans claim government doesn’t work—then they get elected and prove it.
