Just listened to the related Vergecast podcast, and this came up again in the context of third-party audio apps. Like the now playing controls in iOS Control Center and Lock Screen, watchOS 10 shows whatever audio is playing. I’m listening via Overcast on the phone.
@dmoren re: “Some watch faces did use the crown for limited purposes—Metropolitan allowed you to adjust the height of its numerals, the Astronomy face let you zoom through a little virtual orrery—but as it stands now, I can’t find any way to access those features.” Tap the face first, and then scroll the crown.
12% of Americans live in California - but 30% of homeless Americans, and 50% of unsheltered Americans, call California "home." This prompts endless schadenfreude from "red state" partisans, and is waved as proof of the failure of liberal policies. But the real story is both more complicated - and simpler.

Great to see some coverage of the watchOS 10 redesign! https://www.theverge.com/23786155/watchos-10-preview-apple-watch
Not true that the Smart Stack is limited to first-party apps, tho. 🙂
Two things that occurred to me while listening to a discussion about electric cars: 1. Installing charging infrastructure in cities might be a great opportunity to get rid of on-street parking. 2. When most of your trips are 2-10mi, an eBike will do the job well. Maybe even use a car share or rent for long trips.

When people participate in or even praise oppressive power play and toxicity, I’m reminded of this clip. Columbus considered the native americans ignorant but it’s him who is ignorant of true trust and collaboration.
How tiring it must be to only see others as either competition or conquest. Maybe it’s time our society evolves out of that backwards mentality
Got laid off last week
I'm a long-time Apple ecosystem software engineer looking for a senior/lead position at a small to medium size company
My most recent position was as a staff engineer working on an iOS healthcare application that provides users with health and wellness coaching. The new features I worked on this year were all SwiftUI, and I'm eager to continue that path.
- 15 years iOS development
- 25 years macOS dev
- looking for US-remote, no sponsorship
This is a very bizarre summer for me. I've barely even touched the new iOS 17 additions because I'm still making a ton of changes based on suggestions from my WWDC design lab. I don't need any of the new additions to do that.
Some of the changes I'm really excited about.
A design lab can be worth its weight in gold!
@tomn94 how big are stories? Does it need a full on live activity? This feels like something just a background task should handle 🫨.
New instance for Black queer people:
"My intention for BlackQueerLife is that when Black queers are searching for a place in the fediverse to call home, we are accessible to them."

"...the city of Paris has made enormous investments in public transit, built hundreds of miles of bike paths, and closed many streets to cars. Car trips within the city dropped by almost sixty per cent between 2001 and 2018, car crashes dropped by thirty per cent, and pollution has improved. The city is quieter and calmer; test scores go up as the air around schools cleans up."
