I wonder how many of you would feel very uncertain if they got lost, and had to open an actual folding paper map to figure out their position and their destination, rather than rely on their phone.
Before the pandemic, when I did travelling, I couldn't use mobile internet while travelling, so I took pictures of maps a few days before, and memorized my route and options.

@lynne I tried paper maps in the past and it was a mess of guessing position and never being able to fold it back the way it was.
Basically I'm terribly unorganized IRL. Google maps and calendar save me on the regular.
BTW you can select and download areas in Google maps beforehand. support.google.com/maps/answer

@kolya Not for Japan, you couldn't. Besides, they expire all the time and you get nagging notifications to update them, and updating them takes forever, pauses randomly and fails.
I've had to use OSM-based apps before.

If it's a big trip, I take pics/screenshots of maps beforehand.

If it's a small venture, I memorize streets AND distances. Very critical to remember the latter or the former means nothing.

Fun fact: the last time I depended on Google maps, I lost reception at one point and it responded out loud with "you're on your own now".

Never. Again.

@lucifargundam @lynne @kolya fortunately, unlike Google Maps, OSMAnd always downloads the maps, so they work offline with no issues
