At GitHub, we take open source seriously

Corporate lingo right there. A red flag and a contradiction on the said statement or the one that is about to follow.

You heard what happened to ipmi tool? I don't think they care about open source as much as they say they do.

@lucifargundam@qoto.org as expected of a private company. Imagine getting locked of your work because a certain government threw a temper tantrum...or rather a bully

@GNUxeava

at least it's readable. They just can't write to that forge. Supposedly progress will be made at , but I've not trusted them for years. This is all speculation and secondhand commentary though, as no official announcement has been made.

@lucifargundam@qoto.org big and important projects should really be self-hosted. Maintaining a Gitea is trivial. At least in my case. Or use cgit if you do not want pull request, issue, wiki, releases nonsense.

@GNUxeava

What I've learned is that the more a project leans on external resources (be it libs, packages, foundries, etc) the more disruptive it becomes when it _eventually_ encounters an issue in workflow.

That being said, I wholeheartedly agree that important projects should try harder to self-host. Critical infrastructure should be independent and self-sustaining. Not a self-perpetuating Jenga tower.
