Is there a #smarthome solution that doesn't require connecting to remote servers - at least when you're home, using the same wifi as your devices? You know, one that respects #privacy at least as an option?

@muiiio home assistant? Or some other self-hosted thing?

@muiiio yep. Depends on what particular devices you have, of course. But you can run it on a raspberry pi (or whatever, since I think those are still hard to find) and get usb z-wave/ZigBee adapters

@lowpass So, as far as solutions go, this one is more a DIY thing that a complete suite... Still, better than nothing, right?

@muiiio @lowpass Of course it's DYI. What would be the reason for a company to provide a service that would give you independence from them?

@mapto @lowpass Buying hardware for a service is hardly independence. It's just LESS dependence than the surveillance capitalist model everyone seems to have become so accustomed to.

@muiiio @lowpass this is why they now sell hardware at a loss. They know that lock-in is more lucrative. No one is going to go back to a more miserable market. At least not if has to answer to shareholders
