Oh I guess due to not being on Twitter I had missed that a second AI religion has been created (or a schism occurred in the first one?)

Naively I'd assumed that there were people working in AI who don't believe they are becoming the priesthood of a new god and that LLMs are just like a way of generating text with computers that might generate them some money but I guess I was wrong

Actually I think I remember vaguely hearing about them but mostly being annoyed that they were using the word "accelerationism" incorrectly

Also I wonder why the Bay area seems to produce so many weird apocalyptic cults

I actually feel like the fact that the richest people in the US are getting really into what is basically a new religion that encourages and justifies really extreme behavior is more concerning than people realizing

Like the openAI meltdown suggests at least some of them believe this for real. At least people driven by naked greed are predictable and capitalism is a problem we understand. The AI cult is very silly and hard to take seriously but it could still be dangerous

@sanae How exactly is it new? I'm certainly ignorant on the topic, would appreciate a discussion to understand better.

So far to me it seems to be the same pattern of a group thinking they are more worthy of others because they are more successful by their (widely not appreciated by others?) criteria. At the same time their success is generally not related to a particular personal capabilities, but to resourcefulness and ever growing closeness.

Arguably this combination of self-deception and the drive to isolate from the external world as a way to maintain it, is the cause of many failures in history. Of course such failures take a lot of time, due to originally accumulated resources.
