@simon @carlton but statistics cannot give you intent. And without intent, it is just chatter

For Good Friday, I wrote a piece on the history of The Troubles in Northern Ireland for Teen Vogue. As always, grateful to my editor there and the willingness of Teen Vogue to publish pieces like this.

Part of what motivated me was a real concern about what civil conflict looks. It feels close at hand in this country, and I worry that people won’t appreciate it until it’s too late. #histodons #goodfriday @histodons

@Riedl would you consider AI Dungeon to be a precursor of this work? I personally think that platform is even more interesting than ChatGPT, but I don't expect others to share my enthusiasm

@freemo well, it's less funny when you realize it's not a hack, but a corporate order. Hard to call it a decision

Whenever someone talks to you about AI being able to reason, consider showing them this thread. It's arguments will remain valid at least until GPT-7 is out, and more probably until we remind ourselves that statistics are descriptive and totally ignore intent

Afraid of going rogue and killing y'all? Worry not. Planning has got your back. You can ask it to solve any simple few step classical planning problem and snuff that "AGI spark" well and good.

Let me explain.. 🧵 1/

I asked people why they think Russians did it. “To use us as a protection against the Ukrainian army” is the only answer I heard. Russians paraded kids in front of the building when Ukrainian drones were nearby. 9/

Photos of Britney Spears on magazine covers are literally how I realized Americans couldn't tell the difference between a rictus and a smile.

Asked for examples of sexual harassment at law schools, ChatGPT named a GW prof accused of touching a student on a class trip to Alaska, citing a WashPost story.

The prof is real. The rest was made up.

Thank you for not commenting on my fraught relationship with my dad, Bing. Other than that, interesting that GPT-4 can compare numbers of individuals with numbers of events just like that. I think this is not a reading most humans would get for the comparative illusion. @linguistics @psycholinguistics

Stumbled upon this 2003 quote from Ukr president Kuchma. Ru had just tried to take over the Ukr island of Tuzla in the Kerch Straight and build a dam to connect it to Ru mainland. Perhaps Pu was already planning his Kerch Bridge, which indeed passes over and is anchored in Tuzla.

@nntaleb it need not be fear for oneself... or if you want it egocentric, one might be afraid of the unrest that follows from so many people being threatened

@freemo @SirCandinavian@noagendasocial.com too sceptical about self driving myself, unless you're talking of cruise control and automatic parking, but these are also throughout the industry by now
