Generally I post about managed hosting as this is the easiest way to create your own online services.

However, there are many projects out there trying to make non-managed hosting easier too:

yunohost.org is a version of Linux that makes it as easy as possible to install your own services. Once @yunohost is installed on a server, it lets you add lots of online services (yunohost.org/apps) very easily through a graphical interface.

Another approach is freedombox.org which emphasises running your own server at home.

You can install @freedomboxfndn on existing hardware including low power computers like the Raspberry Pi. Alternatively, you can buy a ready-installed FreedomBox server from the open source hardware manufacturer Olimex at olimex.com/Products/OLinuXino/

However you get your FreedomBox running, it lets you add lots of online services that run on the box itself (wiki.debian.org/FreedomBox/Fea)
