I've become mildly obsessed lately with my local mosses and lichens, and especially with the way they interact with water. Look closely, and there's a whole forest of in each mossy patch, and if that metaphor can be extended a little, that would make these something like vernal ponds.

@ianrosewrites Mosses are great! Might this be Kindbergia praelonga? Don't forget to look at liverworts under the microscope. And Sphagnum species.
@markodraisma It certainly could be K. praelonga - I'm still not confident with my IDs but that looks like a close match.
